Fathom's Reverb, was Re: guitar or amp?

Well I believe that is just for the reformed Fathoms in live
situations only.
I've always assumed the Fathoms used tanks in the studio. I read an
interview with the Fathoms a looong time ago and Frankie made it sound
like a lot of reverb was added after the fact. He kept telling the
engineer to add more reverb, and the poor guy couldn't believe they
wanted that much. I'm not exactly sure what that meant however. Does
anyone know how the Fathoms got such a wall of reverb sound?

The Space Cossacks had the honor to play two gigs with the Fathoms,
one in '96 and the other in '98. In both situations both Frankie
and Greg the rhythm guitarist used honest-to-God Fender reverb units
(I think both reissues, and very likely unmodded) and no pedals.
Frankie used a vintage Jazzmaster through an original blackface Twin
Reverb, while the Greg used a Jap reissue Jazzmaster through an
original blackface Super Reverb the first time and a new US Standard
Strat the second time (I don't recall his amp the second time). So,
reverb units were most CERTAINLY used. I think that Frankie's just
downsizing his gear so he doesn't have to carry much. He also
doesn't play a Twin anymore (a Deluxe Reverb now?).
Frankie did have footswitches for both the Twin Reverb and the
reverb unit, and he would switch between the amp reverb and the
reverb unit depending on the song.
As far recording, I don't think you're remembering that correctly,
Brian. I think Frankie said that the engineer asked him to TURN
DOWN the reverb, and Frankie had to explain to the guy that's
exactly the sound he wants. I don't think there was anything done
in production, just straight recording.

Yep, here's the word straight from Frankie himself:
"With The Fathoms I use Fender amps, a 65 Fender Jazzmaster, and
for reverb I just started using the Electro Harmonix `Holy Grail
Reverb.' It's the closest thing to a reverb tank without all the
hassles; people can't tell the difference."

Hah! That reminds me of the time Davie Allan was warming up at a
soundcheck, and the moron working behind the board asked him, "Can
we work on getting that buzz out of your amp?"
LOL!

I don't know the answer to Brian's question as to how the Fathoms got so
much reverb on their recordings, but I was at the show they did in
Worcester, MA several weeks ago. At that show, Frankie was complaining that
his Fender tank was on the fritz (ever hear that before?), so he ended up
using a Holy Grail pedal (I think) - it sounded pretty darn good!
As an interesting side note, his rhythm guitarist was using a POD Line 6 at
the show for reverb with his Gretsch! That sounded solid, too . . .

I think I found the interview I was remembering.

Doesn't the guitarist from the Fathoms own a world
class recording studio that was on the cover of one of
the big recording magazines? "Mix", possibly?
