about the Exotica 2 weekend (Tiki side of things)

Jeff (bigtikidude) - 19 Jul 2005 08:31:22

I'm not sure how into tii/exotica/hawiian stuff some of you that
attended are. But was wondering what you thought about the Non
surf bands that played? What about the decore of the venue/vendors?
Was there any music played by a dj between bands?
Phil Tiki any comments?
Thanks,
Jeff(bigtikidude)

Hey Jeff. BTW, I'm still digging your demo CD. Very nice stuff, indeed!
Yes. Exotica and other Hawaiian was spun between sets. Very cool
stuff. Guest DJs were booked who were known to spin Exotica/Hawaiian.
With the custom Mai Tais, the surf bands, Hawaiian dancers, and Tiki
booths, it was a great time.
The problem for me was with Los Straightjackets. It kinda killed the
whole atmosphere for me. IMHO, They didn't really fit the theme.
Don't get me wrong, I love LS, they just seemed out of place to me.
From what I heard, Melanie Angel (who booked the entertainment)
wanted to make it more like a Las Vegas Grind. More garage & tassels,
less reverb & grass skirts. We had to pull out all the stops just to
be considered. Overall though, I thought everything worked out ok.
There is a pretty good Tiki scene in Chicago and after playing
Trader Vic's a few times, we started to notice alot of the regulars.
The place was packed with people into Tiki, it seemed, until LS hit
the stage. There was a line to get in the place just before LS hit
the stage and the Aloha-shirt-to-regular-shirt ratio went way down
when they started. Maybe they should have imported The Blue Hawaiians
to headline instead. THAT would have been perfect.
I had a great time, none the less.

I am not the Tiki fan like you, and have no idea about these things,
but I think you would have been happy. As Phil Tiki said, they had
lots of cool tunes being spun by guest DJ's. The only non-surf-
related band I saw was this acoustic guitar / slide guitar duo. They
were quiet and low key and frankly I was talking to people when they
were playing. But they did have several Hawaiian dancers dancing to
live percussion, and then a fire dancer at night. The vendors were
selling retro clothes, tiki masks (very cool), mugs, hot rod /
custom car stuff, and lots of other stuff. They had some large tiki
heads about.
Again, my only knowledge of tiki stuff comes from The Brady Bunch
and the cursed tiki necklace pendant...Greg wiped out, someone threw
out their back, Vincent Price was in a cave...it's all a blur to me
now. :)

Thanks to
Phil and Brian for the more tiki related reviews.
I'm sure I would have been way stoked to have seen the 2 sides
converge. The Tiki Oasis in Palm Springs, and most other tiki
related happenings here in So. Cal. are very Hawiian/or Exotica
music related(which is fine- I totally dig that stuff). But I
mentioned to Otto Von Stroheim in a e-mail about getting a couple
surf bands(possibly the Blue Hawiians) at the next Tiki Oasis event.
And he didn't reply. I don't know if it's cause he's not interested,
or just real busy, and missed the e-mail.
There was a Tiki/Vintage Clothing/Bamboo Furniture/Old SkateBoard/
Old Surf Board swap meet recently, and they Had the Torquays play 2
sets. I was diggin' hangin' out in the midst of a bunch of 6 ft.
tikis watchin' the band rip it up in a brick Gym, old school stlye.
But alot of the Vendors were like, gosh it's loud, can they turn
down?

I saw this link on Tiki Central from Amy Carter. There's a bunch of
photos from the 3 days. There's even one of The Nebulas in their
masks...

Phil,
Thanks for posting that link!
Weird how the pictures make it seem like almost nobody was there,
when my primary memory of the event was how CROWDED it was (and how
hard it was to get from one side of the place to the other).
I also got a HUGE laugh from seeing the solitary image of Gregory
Fleeman's shell-covered Jeep, parked outside the venue!
