Rat Holic

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 18 Jul 2005 19:44:18

Rat Holic:
Cool stuff or Japanese lo-fi novelty act? I've heard both. Is it worth
getting? What is the surf content?
Thanks,
BN

Brian,
I think the album's definitely worth getting. I didn't have a problem with the
sound quality (though some people do), and a lot of the songs are really cool.
The more common covers ("Surf Party," "Shake & Stomp") are arranged a bit
differently than most other versions, and some of it is just plain rockin'.
It's not the surfiest thing I've ever heard, but the organ and/or sax lead tunes
are close enough. It ain't trad, though, that's for sure.
I'm not really sure how they could be considered a novelty--a few tunes are
boring, but as long as you can stomach a little filler, go for it.

Brian:
I think it could be cool stuff, but really suffers from the lo-fi recording,
IMHO. Surf content is there, but hard to listen to (for me, at least).
I'll bet these guys put on a great live show - I just wish this recording
was easier to listen to (I don't play it much . . .)

My review says "The performances here are very good, and the
arrangements fun, but the audio distorion makes listening quite a
chore. It sounds like a dub from worn out vinyl with digital distortion
induced. Musically, this CD is fun, but sound is so bad that I can not
recommend it."
The audio is not "in the red" in the analog sense. It's badly clipped
and very hard to listen to. Not lo-fi, digitally bad. Some like that
sort of thing. I'm not among them.

Brian,
from the couple songs I've heard on Clin't show, I'd have to agree
with what Phil said. I was very intrigues at first read about the
band. But I don't think I will be getting it.
If tons of energy lo fi is your bag, then get it.

Brian, you can check out some of their songs on their website and judge
for yourself:
I don't have the album myself and although I agree with others that the
sound quality could have been a bit better, I still think this is one
of the cooler bands I've come across this year. Just listen to their
wild version of "Church Key" with the girls screaming their lungs out!
