Bassman Question?

stratrhythm - 16 Jul 2005 15:36:41

Hi Folks'
For all you who use or have used Bassman heads or older tweed Bassman
for regular guitar applications,
Which input channel do you (did you) use?
There is at least one picture on the internet where a famous (non-
surf) guitarist is using a blonde head and he is clearly using the
normal channel.
But I found this curious...

When Dave Wronski of Slacktone played through his blonde with oxblood
bassman he played on the Bass channel in input number 2. Or that is
what it looks like in the video.

When I had two 1970's issued Bassmans I always used the normal channel.
One mod that alot of player's do is to change out the coupling cap to
a smaller value. This cut some of the low end below what your guitar
produces and make it a bit less muddy. Some of the 70 to 80's issues
that a different diver in front of the power tubes so they had a
little stranger distortion when over driven. There is a mod to change
that to a full wave driver, but thats another thread in itself.
Other then that it's a killer 50 watt platform. So get a dual 15
fender box, a Tremolo, a Fuzz box (not a overdrive) and a Reverb tank
and Go Nut!

I play a 1966 Bassman 50 through 2x 12" Celestions...
I play through the first input of the "bass" channel...the
"normal" channel is way too bright for my taste.
The "bass" channell has a wrm fat tone...I run my bass tone
pot at 5 and my treble tone pot at 7...nice shimmery highs
on top of a full toned bottom end.
sweet!

Hi,
I have a '64 Bassman (AA864) head and I use it with a 2x12" Jensen
Ceramic cab. I can't use the bass instrument inputs on mine, since
they are very dark, even with the "deep" switch off. I usually use the
Normal 1 input. But the AA864 does differ a lot from the more common
AA165/AB165, since it's a different amp all together.
But the normal (1 or 2) input on mine sounds very nice (mostly with
the bright switch on) and with my Jazzmaster into a Fender RI tank
(with 6K6 mod) I'm very pleased with this sound.
But A really huge sound can be obtained bu linking the Bassman head
onto a huge Showman 2x15" JBL loaded cab....

I am using a blackfaced '71 SF bassman (I think it's AB165 specs but
don't kill me if it's not)
I use the normal channel, no bright switch. on occasion sometimes I
link through to the bass channel with a patchchord from normal2 to
bass1, I'll set the volume on the bass channel at 2 or something, more
of an eq thing then a second pre-amp, really. gets too muddy otherwise.
Use it with two 15" JBLs, D140F's, in seperate cabs. pretty big sound.

Thanks for answering my question abour Bassman (Bassmen? pl?) use
for
regular guitar!
Thoughts:
1. The reason I posed the question in the first place was looking at
the schematic. The bass channel has (at least) one extra half preamp
tube - looked like a sort of built in overdrive. But I don't own
one
and it's been years since I've even been around one, so I
wondered....
2. But then I noticed a picture of Pete Townsend (yeah, that picture
,
DP) playing through a Blonde Bassman head, and you could clearly see
he was using the normal channel, so "curiouser and curiouser..."
3. Totals answers were 3 normals, 2 bass: I wonder if the answer
would
be the same in a blues group?
