the phantom frank indorock connection

mono_tones_1 - 15 Jul 2005 05:04:48

just got a mail back from phantom Frank Gerritsen, I'd shot him a line
asking about the indorock connection because of the recent discussion
about dark/black eyes.
this is what he said (my translation, his mail was in dutch)
"Both influences are right (i reffered to both the north-
african/eastern connection and the indorock one, WR). In my playing you
can defintely hear the indorockes, lots of eastern european and gyspy
scales. I wrote Toenggoe Mati (Hasheeda)as a tribute to the indorock.
Next to that, I've always loved Arabic, Indian, Turkish Greek and other
exotic sounds. Because of these preferences, we've always sounded a bit
less mainstream American like most other surfbands. Maybe that made us
special. Also, covering Kraftwerk and OMD isn't common in the surf-
scene, let alone working with a real Maroccan singer."
I can add that the phantom 4 live at De Diepte cd, even more explores
the ethnic influences, frank plays sitar too this time around. and
again, great stuff with ethnic vocals.
But Phantom four defintly is a great band in its own right, and by no
means just a continuation of the treble spankers.

Awesome Wannes! Thanks for doing that. I really dig the Treble
Spankers and am excited Phantom Frank is back. I wish the Treble
Spankers material was easier to get a hold of in the US....

treble spankers stuff is hard to come by anyware - something with the
record company owning the rights and not wanting a reprint - me non

the new stuff on the other hand - both his solo album and the phantom
