Can this really be?

bruce duncan (wetreverb) - 13 Jul 2005 23:26:09

I thought I'd seen it all, like that Pepto-Bismol pink Ed Roman Mosrite someone
listed on ebay, with a minimum opening bid amout of $20-Grand, but this really
stuns me, not for the asking price, which started out reasonable, but for where
the last two bids have brought it.
A 1966 (Not even pre-CBS!) Fender Sunburst (Least desirable color for
collectors) Jazzmaster, described as "Guitar is in a used condition, it has
scratches and dents, paint is worn out in a couple of places. Comes with a
carrying case."
There are eighteen bids so far. Bid #17 was for $9,995.00, and Bid #18 for
$10,095.00!!!!!!!
This is E-Bay Item #7336057701, or direct link:
This appears to be for real - I thought the market on a J/M in this much
less-than-pristine condition was maybe $3,000 absolute TOPS.

Hey Bruce. I was watching that guitar as I was going to pressure our
lead guitarist to buy it. I think it is a joke bid or something like
that. There is no way it is worth that much. There are much more
desirable Jazzmasters(for the scarcity of the guitar) than a Sunburst
66 Jazzmaster.

Jacob,
I totally agree it's not worth that kinda money, yet two, apparently unrelated
bidders, entered bids #17 and #18. Worse, "von-steuben" who entered the $9,995
bid #17, is a seasoned E-Bayer, with 284 prior transactions to his record, a
"feedback" rating of 99.7% positive and a very active buyer and seller of
guitars and related items!
Meanwhile, Item #7336139607, an original '59 Jazzmaster with Gold Anodized guard
and slab-board neck has gone languishing with zero bids, against a minimum
$6,699 opening bid. And Item #7335795054, a '66 Jazzmaster with original Black
Finish and matching headstock, (a real rarity!), is sitting at $1,800, having
not made seller's reserve, and has a "Buy It Now" price of $2,900, a comparative
steal versus the $10,000 Sunburst one!

For what it's worth, I believe that the auction was a scam. There was some
discussion of scam auctions on the fender forum, with pictures stolen from
other auctions or vintage shop websites. My guess is that some members of
the offset gang who recognized the guitar bid it up to protect the naive.

Oowww, that is a wicked ugly burst paint job! I really dislike that hard red
ring rather than
a nice fade to wood grain in the center. Yes, the price seems about $8,000 out
of line! A
'59, maybe. But a '66?
G
BTW, I was in Vegas last year and Ed Roman had Pepto-pink MossRiots for about
$2,500!

I think you're right. The current bid price for this guitar is back to

Now wait a minute. If the auction was scam, why is it now getting more realistic bids? I'm thinking the scam had
to do with one of the bidders and the guitar is actually legit. The seller must
have cancelled the offending bidder.

The bid history shows that someone retracted the
$10.5k bid. I think someone put one too many zero's
in their bid amount...

Well, The bid amount jumped from $1,150 to $9,995, BEFORE the $10,995 bid figure
appeared, and THAT bid was the one entered by von-steuben, and you'll note, his
bid has not been retracted since it was made on July 12. The funny thing about
ebay is that if the amount bid is standing at, say, $1,000.00, and the next
bidder enters $10,000.00, the effective amount of the new bid is only bumped an
incremental amount, about $50.00 over the previous high bid, so I'm guessing
that you could bid $2,000 on that guitar right now, and you'd see von-Steuben
still showing as the high bidder at $2,050.00 or so.

That makes sense. Now we have to wonder if that was done deliberately in order
to reveal the high end on Von-S's proxy. That really messes up the auction. Now
a shill can come in and up the Von-S bid to a high but reasonable amount.

Hey guys - Guess WHAT!!
Von-Steuben's bid has now been removed, bringing the bid price down to $913.56.
Maybe this little discussion thread somehow got to these people and/or someone
reported this curious bidding actitivity to e-bay, but whatever, it looks like
the auction is back to being an honest auction, at least for the time being!!

Removing the bid is the only thing Von-S could do. Everyone knew his high bid
and he could easily be shilled into paying more than he wants to pay. He had a
high proxy 'cause he wanted to make sure to win. I'm guessin' he'll throw in a
high snipe bid at the end.

I saw the discussion, Mel. It doesn't shed any new light to my theory.

There are two nice vintage Jazzmasters with Buy it Nows of 2900- and another
over 7k. Neither are sunburst. Von-s is an Elvis Costello fan so he wants a
sunburst.
Von-s did not want to be snipped, so he put in a proxy of 10k. He knew that no
legit bidder is going to bid close to 10k. A legit bidder is going to bid maybe
3k. No seller is going to have a shill go much higher than 2k. What did happen
with the better than 10k bid was either an honest mistake or an attempt to find
out von-s's high bid.
