trem picking/double picking

mom_surfing - 13 Jul 2005 10:21:56

i'm reading all the posts and it's making me think i'm doing it all
wrong. take for example the beginning of 'pipeline' which to me is
just fast alternate picking with a steady slide on the neck as opposed
to say the picking on a lot of other tunes where the picking on a
single note is accented on the first down stroke and then down up down
but not accented and then repeated on the same note or moved on to
another single note. or accented down stroke and then down up down
down but not accented. it guess there's just endless patterns to this
type of picking. (examples would be 'point conception' by the
eliminators or 'squad car') i find some songs really easy to do and
others my pick seems to get caught on my upstroke. (practice practice)
i've also found it easier to do on heavier strings and using a .88
pick as opposed to a lighter one......... i know with only six years
of playing i'm still a beginner im comparison to most of this group.
i've been playing surf since i started but have concentrated on it
almost exclusively for the last year and have learned 30 instrumentals
start to finish. from reading all the posts to this group it's been a
'the more i learn the less i know' experience. just assure me i'm not
going mad...maybe it's the chia tea i just drank :)

just 2b sure.
most machine gun picking (as DD calls it, yet another word for
thesame thing!) usually IS unaccented. My refference to practicing
with accents was only to build up accuracy (ie regular division of
notes over time) - to loose accents again after that. I made the
comment because i thought the original post complained about lack of
accuracy.
of course there is also accented trem picking - the start of miserlou
has it i think, same with redlined on the melody notes. but it's not
regular accents, but 'strategically placed'
sorry if i confused you.

in reading my post i sound like an idiot. it's just hard to explain
something that would be so simple face to face, guitar to guitar. when
i think back it's all mostly fast alternate picking, some with single
notes added in between like the intro to 'shake and stomp'. like i
said, hard to explain :)

I heard, or maybe read, an interview with DD in which he also
called it "butterfly" picking.
