Guys,
Well I went ahead and purchased a used starter set on Ebay this
morning. In discussing with my wife she did not want to spend lots
of money (naturally) but I found a Sivertone SS-11 with a Smart IIIS
amp to get me started. I'm looking forward to start messing around a
bit with it.

The Silvertone is just like a gateway drug - you get it fairly cheap & then
you're hooked. Pretty soon you'll be calling the Fender Custom Shop to get
inflated quotes on modified super-Jags with one-of-a-kind fretboards with
iron-cross inlays - and you'll do this when you don't even have enough money
to take your wife out to the movies. God forbid if you start playing
shows - then you'll feel the urge to get a backup guitar that sounds just as
cool as your main one, as well as a vintage Bassman just to get "that sound"
for practice. Of course by this point, you'll be living alone behind the
steel roll-up door of a medium sized unit at the local public storage
facility cooking noodles on a 2-burner hot plate. Just as long as you know
what you're getting into.
