Sorry, it takes me years to reply sometimes. As far
as active electronics go, I've heard them a lot and
played a few but have never really entertained the
thought. I have a '62 reissue P-bass, and I really
like the sound of passive elecs with pretty much
everything. I don't know how to describe it, but I'm
going to go out a limb and say "too bright." Every
time I hear that really bright active bass sound I
just kind of cringe. Yes, I had a hard time watching
"Seinfeld." (Though that might not have actually been
a string bass.)
I know that some onboard preamps will allow you to
turn the actives on and off (or at least allow you to
mess with the sound until it sounds like it), and I've
seen them for (I think) around $90 starting off.
Anybody that makes them will definitely have them for
Fenders. What you may want to do instead of shelling
out for an active P with the big humbucker (which is
$$$, at least to me) is buy a regular Precision or a
Deluxe Precision (or Precision Plus, I don't remember
exactly, it's the P that came with a regular Jazz
pickup at the bridge, also passive. They can be had
at pretty good prices new since they got discontinued
last year) and just replace the pickups with active
pickups and install a preamp. I imagine you'd
probably wind up spending about the same amount of
money or close to it that you would just buying an
active P, but you would have the option of nixing the
actives if you wanted.
Too bad I don't really mess with these things too
much. Hey Phil, you play bass, you ever mess with
anything besides your old '51 P?

You talkin' to me? It was a Sting Signature I had (notice the carefully
placed hands covering the 12th fret signature inlay). I really liked that
bass except for the big fat neck...I ended up selling that and getting a
Gretsch 6119B Tennessee Rose Bass. Short scale but AMAZING tone! That and my
backup bass (94 Charvel Surfcaster Bass in Sea Foam Green) went on our
California tour. When I got back I had to (with much regret) sell the
Gretsch. I miss her. I currently have a CIJ 62RI Jazz Bass in Sonic Blue.
As far as active pickups go, I haven't heard any that sound good with a
pick.....then again, I'm not a big fan of Ampeg amps either...
