That would be interesting to hear more about. I wonder if they still
did their surf instros at that time?

Klas,
Here are some more details I gleaned from Eddie Katcher from the
show and in a subsequent email.
Eddie saw them twice in Atlanta. The Astronauts were put on some
kind of women's fashion show thing, where the models would come out
and show off clothes, then the Astronauts would play, etc. Something
like that, Eddie could not remember exactly. The Astronauts hated
it. By that time, they were no longer playing their surf
instrumentals, they had moved into their R&B phase. He might have
said that Stormy Patterson had been drafted at that point, and
wasn't in the band anymore, but don't quote me on that. Eddie said
he got to talk shop with Rich Fifield, and one of the things Rich
told him about was his technique for using skinnier strings. He
simply moved each string "down" so to speak, high E to B, B to G,
etc, and then put a banjo string on for the high E. So not everyone
was digging the heavier strings back then.
If I can get Eddie to join the list I am sure he can provide better
info than me 2nd hand.

Thanks for the info Brian. Playing on a women fashion show in the mid
60's sounded pretty cool to me :-) Got me thinking of the beautiful
ice cold Hullabaloo models (no go-go girls here) often appearing
together with the bands on the TV show. As for Astronauts surf
instros, they did two great reverb tunes ("Quiet Village"
and "Gouch") on their 1965 album "Go...Go...Go!!!" so they obviously
hadn't totally given up the genre at the time. Anyone not familiar
with their cool version of the exotica classic "Quiet Village" can
check it out in this thread (second post from bottom):

My understanding from some kids I knew for a while (circa 1964-65) from
Boulder, CO is that the Astronauts almost never did their surf stuff
live on their home turf - sticking to the club rock covers they brought
froward from the Stormtroopers days. The later albums were much as they
REALLY were before RCA got their hands on them, but that's another
story!
