TIELMAN Re: A Little Flash Guitar

mono_tones_1 - 11 Jul 2005 08:44:51

Phil,
I am a bit surprised that you didn't know Andy Tielman - I always
figured they were sorta famous and you'd know about them - guess not.
Tielman brothers (Andy always being the biggest star) were the biggest
act in the 60's instrumental scene in Holland.
I don't know an awful lot about the history of the genre, but it's
called "indo-rock" - google that and you'll find shitloads - most in
Dutch though.
as a side note, this dutch instro scene consisted mostly of Indo's -
that being the name of half dutch / half indonesian people, lots of
which came to holland in the period were former colony indonesia gained
independence from the netherlands. as you might aspect, being cought
between to cultures, these indo's as they were called were sorta f-ed
both ways - a highly marginalized group that had to fight real hard to
get recognition. I think Andy T spend years abroad because he was fed
up with the Netherlands.
Things have changed since then, but the indorock scene is still
maintained by a small group of die hard fans, as far as i can tell from
net info. the Indo/Indonesian has an annual festival in The Hague,
which was a few weeks back. Andy Tielman played there. I found out
because i just happend to have to be there for work and passed the
festival location the day after, and saw the poster - hit myself in the
head for missing it.

We had a small and inconclusive thread about the Tielman brothers and
Indo rock a while back. Check out message #10262

What an interesting little diversion...Indo instro bands in the 1950s & early
1960s, who'd
have thunk it. I'd really like to hear a few of the better recordings, if they
exist. The article
stated that the Indo bands didn't record much, but you'd think there's some
recording out
there. Does anybody on the list have any? If so, perhaps they could post a
(good) song
sample to the site?
Gavin
P.S. It's notable (at least to me) that instro music was popping up all over in
the early
1960s, not just in California. There was Australia (The Atlantics), England (The
Shadows),
the interior U.S. (The Trashmen, The Astronauts) and this Indo phenomena. Quite
cool!

I got the Twangies Live in '62. The Quality is really bad, there's
about 50 percent instro stuff and the rest are popular vocal #s.
They were pretty good, too bad the quality isn't that great. But,
it is a live recording from 1962.
If you want to know all there is to know on Indo-rock it's here.

enduring weakness.

I know the size of your head, but i was under the impression that you
had some kind of brain internal data compression system goin on ;-)
2b honest, I odnt know that much of indo-rock either, I have a few
comps. most of it is pretty cheesy, but there were killer guitarists.
In the scene, it worked pretty much like in gypsy (sp) circles,
Reinhardt/Rosenber, that sorta thing, i.e. always guitars around and
kids learning from 5 years old on, taught by family members.
IF anyone is intersted, we could do an e-mail interview IF I can track
him down. he probably speaks english well enough, but if needed i could
always translate. IF anyone has questions for him that is, of course.

a bit more tielman,
for reasons unknown to me, the site is completly in Dutch - i read a
bit and here's the scoop:
- a few weeks back, Andy Tielman got a Royal Decoration - it's a kinda
what knighthood is in Brittain, tho much lower graded. it basically is
a medail and a title (much like sir) that is given once a year by royal
prerogative to a few hundred people that have "meant something special
for Dutch society" - the range goes from politicians that actually made
a differnce, to captains of industry, to artists and volunteer workers.
but really, you need to have done something special to get it, and it
is valued highly in dutch society. You can see a clip of the cermony on
the pop up on the site Phil mentioned.
- Seeing were Andy comes from - Indonesia around the late '40's, it
getting its independence, the marginalized cultural background of
indonesian people in the Netherlands (lots of them came because they
couldn't stay in indonesia because they'd been too good friends with
the dutch, I dont think thats how the Tielmans ended up here, but it
shaped the climate nonetheless), I think he never really got a foot
between the door in the music industry because of his background
(happened with more indonesion musicians here), bad financial deals,
him leaving the country because of frustration. In short, circumstances
(and shitloads of people) have not treated this man well. It's good to
see him get official recognition. And from what I can tell from the
videos and what I have read over the years, personal pride is a big
issue for him.
given that, in my book he completly gets away with doing "my way".
- also a couple of weeks ago, a DVD came out 'my life' or something
like that, old and new photo's, video clips, music, probably
interviews. Im leaning against ordering it .... I'll let you know if it
is worth getting for a non dutch speaker.
