Crazy combos

holyreveb - 09 Jul 2005 11:55:36

Anyone ever tried a Fender Reverb Tank through a Marshall? My guess is
with the right guitar and a reverb tank any amp with a clean tone and a
fat bottom is going to swim.

Phil Dirt (dirtkfjc) - 09 Jul 2005 13:01:45

Da Monz and early Berzerkers used a fuzz box and Fender tank with a
Marshall amp. Great rock 'n' roll tone for sure, but Marshalls have no
bottom end.

How about switching the Marshall for a Matchless, that would solve the bottom
end issue, real Fat tone on that

Yeah but why go to a Matchless? They're purdy danged expensive and you can get
the right tone out of many less expensive Fenders. Even the Fender hand-wired
custom shop amps aren't as expensive as the Matchless.

true for sure, they are like a rolls royce. I wasnt thinking price, but sound
was the issue, still I find the Matchless has a cleaner tone than any Fender,
even hand wired versions don't stack up to my ears. Ahh its on a wish list for
me to get a Matchless one day, I just love that Fat tone. I am a Fender amp fan
for sure, been a fan for the last 20 years. I have 2 vibrolux and a 65' twin,
they work great for my set up but if I had the doe I would definately grab a
king size matchless

The new Marshalls should a ton of bottom end, I believe they have
been designing them for the Metal guys using dropped tunnings.

I'll be darned, I didn't know that Matchless amps were known for clean. I
thought they were another of those boutique amps favored by blues and rock guys
who like the amp to break up at low volumes.
Speaking of clean amps , the new Fender Twin Amp, the tweed handwired 40 watt
dual tube rectifier one, is awesome! The preamp section is just volume, bass,
treble, presence and is clear of any reverb or tremelo stage. Then of course we
get to dirty it up with an outboard tank.

I know, but in a perfect world, us guit junkies would get all the toys we
wanted. I used to use a marshall 4x12 cabnet in my mix, with an old ampeg head,
now there is a cheap set up, great tone too. I had problems with a buzz in the
amp so no good for recording, but wow it was a deep tone for a stage. Plus in
the same mix I used a pedal called Rotovibe, which can be pretty cheezy if the
treble setting is too high. I would roll off the treb on the strat or tele that
I use, right down to nothing, use the rotovibe and fender amps to drive. It
would make my tele sound like a B-3 organ, play by pulling 2 strings at a time
and no bending, just an amazing likeness to the ordan tones.

The new Ampeg amp SR-212RT looks like it may be cool, I have heard
some Budda Amps that were very clean and punchy. Also Peavey has a
new vintage tube head with a 4x12 cab that I want to check out.
The last show The Woodies ever did I used a 100Watt HiWatt head,
strange but true my Showman burned to the ground in a UPS truck. It
was an outdoor concert and I cranked that baby up, it sounded killer.
The problem was that amp only sounded good cranked, way to loud.
I have a CyberTwin now but I may dump it, it's fine for studio work
but lacks big time in the botton end for live surf.
It may end up getting a newer Showman with a 4X12 cab, not sure yet.

cool, I will try it out at the music store the next time I get there. I love
twins, had many over the years. A trusted amp anyday.
At first the matchless was a bit more as you described, back when Jimmy Vaughan
was touring after his brother died. He used 2 of them with a 147 leslie and it
would break up at low volume(think he wanted that) but in the past few years
some of the models are designed to compete with the best of Fender and mesa's (I
am not a fan of Mesa)

they work great for my set up but if I had the doe I would definately grab a

Hey that combo sounds like it would be cool, I used to do that same
trick with a Rotovibe, your right it does sound good.
You want cheese I've got cheese. Years ago I didn't have a reverb
tank so I used to hang a extra reverb unit on a coat hanger off the
back of a twin. I think it's possible the first time Phil Dirt saw me
play I was still doing that.

an old ampeg head, now there is a cheap set up, great tone too. I had
problems with a buzz in the amp so no good for recording, but wow it
was a deep tone for a stage. Plus in the same mix I used a pedal
called Rotovibe, which can be pretty cheezy if the treble setting is
too high. I would roll off the treb on the strat or tele that I use,
right down to nothing, use the rotovibe and fender amps to drive. It
would make my tele sound like a B-3 organ, play by pulling 2 strings
at a time and no bending, just an amazing likeness to the ordan tones.

Does it go to eleven?
There was a surfband (sort of) locally called Yam Slam ("Surf It Up" is
a too-fun vocal!) that changed their name to Goes To Eleven.

I tried playing through several Marshall amps with a reverb tank. Most times
I tried was with a PLX1959 100 watt superlead re-issue with a 4x12 (that's
what the rehearsal room had, and my amp was in for repair). Sounded OK
played alone, but within band context the reverb would get all swallowed up
becasue of the mid content of the amp's tone. No matter what I did, it never
sounded wet. That's the problem with playing non-fender gear. The Fender
guitars and amps have a scooped mid sound that allows the reverb to come
through. (That's also the cause of the problem of the lead guitar getting
burried in the mix, so one has to be careful when playing in a 2 or 3 guitar
combo).

Twins are capable of an icy sound, especially if they have those JBL's with dome
tweeter. Otherwise Twins have a good range from low to high. They're just too
danged heavy for me. The new 40W is significantly lighter.

Sorry, no experience with the Prosonic...but I do play through a Marshall
4X12 that has "Vintage 30" speakers and I think it sounds good. The speakers
make a lot of difference, though, as the standard Celestion 75 gt (is that
the right model name?) sound like crap.
Regarding Ice-pick sound on Twin Reverbs, that's a tough one to battle while
still having enough reverb. On my 2 X15 and my 4X12 I have weber VST's beam
blockers to disperse the treble a little more evenly. I use the amp with no
more than 6 or 7 on the treble and with the bright switch off (it's a 69 TR
used as a head and "blackfaced"). I also hate playing the high strings
becasue of that ice-pick tone. If I could find a flatwound 15 string, then
all my strings would have been wound and that would have helped me
immensely.

I'm curious about Ran's statement about the lead guitar getting buried.
Have others out there experienced this? And what ways have you come up
with to deal with this?
EQ's, different amps, different guitars???
