Total Eye-Poppin' Madness!!!

bruce duncan (wetreverb) - 09 Jul 2005 00:22:27

We all know how utterly crazy the "Vintage Guitar" marketplace has become in the
past 25 years. I've finally seen it all! Some fool might pop $4,000+ for an
old Mosrite, but $2,575.00 for a 1963 Stratocaster plastic pickguard? Go on the
below link, read it and laugh yourself silly!
Several hundred years ago, in Holland they had a similar phenomenal spiralling
market for Tulip Bulbs!!

I sold a '59 Strat nitro-celluose pickguard for
$1150.00 recently that had the usual break at the edge
of the neck pickup hole. If somebody has a dead mint
guitar with the only flaw being that some dork changed
the pickguard to a checkerboard pattered one, then
getting it all original, and making it a no-excuses
$12,000 guitar makes both aesthetic, and economic
sense. Too bad there is no way to buy a fake one with
the properly angled beveled edge, so you could have
the look and save a little cash.

A 59 strat just sold in Montreal a few weeks back for $18,500.00 CND Funds, this
strat was really ripped up, tons of scratches and dings in it a far cry from
mint. I have one of the same year, I wont part with it. Mine also has LF-10/59
on the shoe where the neck joins. All original parts but the first rosewood neck
I think was on this model, could be wrong about that. I was offered 15k about 6
months back and my 59 is pretty banged up too, kinda looks like Stevie Ray
Vaughans beet up 59. Anyways all this to say that I see the trends go up and
down for this stuff, but over 2 k for a 63 pick guard thats nuts. I have a 69
left handed tremelo, wonder what thats worth

You are correct sir, the first rosewood necks appeared in the second half of
'59. 2k for the pickguard does sound funny but DW is right. I'd pay it if I had
a good early '60's strat that needed it. Maybe I'll get it for my Mexi Strat ;-)
