Hello-
I picked up a "crafted in China" Squier Affinity strat this weekend
for next to nothing.

Can I teach myself to set the action and
intonation, or should I find a guitar tech ...

Dear Friends,
In an effort to help all my surf-afflicted guitar amigos,
I recommend THE book that has been most helpful in my
understanding of guitar setup.
Get thee to the local library and search for;
"GUITAR PLAYER REPAIR GUIDE"; (2nd edition),
by Dan Erlewine. (ISBN 0-87930-291-7)
Check it out and you will see that you will need a copy
for your very own. I got my own copy at half.com, cheap.
Check out eBay also.
The book has boodles of info on neck setups (including
shims), maintenance, repair, body care, etc.
I got so inspired, I obtained a beater strat-o-clone
cheap on eBay to setup. (It's gonna be great with rotosound
purples!)
I got more strat parts to fix it up, now I gotta build another
with a mity-mite maple neck and a real strat body. This is fun.
If they ever let me quit my job, I'd like to build & setup guitars.
:>)
Bill,
the indentured surf.
Came with fender strings, which seem poorly reviewed. Suggestions for
replacements? Daddario flatwounds seem well-regarded. Opinion on
guages for a cheap strat like this?
I've had a few electric guitars in the past but never learned to
properly set them up, they were always fine for me. I would like to
learn to do it on my own, so I guess I wonder if I should have it done
by a pro to know what is "right", or if I should just tinker with it
on my own.
Sorry for the 101 questions, seems like this list is really
SurfGuitar501!!! (thats a complement)
Thanks yall
