July 4, 2005, The Surfaris (some original band members included)
rocked the Huntington Beach Pier in a great show suitable for the
entire family from from 4 - 6 PM. The beach location & weather were
perfect. The pier bowl area was full & people were hanging off the
pier. The sound system could have been better but Paul Johnson's
outstanding guitar playing overcame the limitations of the sound
system and the base that was a bit overpowering. The play list
included most of the surf classicssuch as Apache, Hawaii Five - 0,
Wipe Out, Surfer Joe, Point Panic, Mr. Moto & Penetration to name just
a few.
At one point Paul Johnson took the stage solo to play The Star
Spangled Bannner on his white Stratocaster which he played in a very
dignified but slightly surfed up rendition of our National Anthem in
front of a respectful crowd that rose to their feet.
July 4, 2005, solidified Paul Johnson as one of the finest surf
guitarists in the world. It was a great show that ended with a fine
Link Wray medley.
