Hey Mike,
I've got "El Torro" from the Continental Records compilation they released a
while back. Very cool! You also have a snazzy looking web site. Whats the
surf scene like in Canada? How did the USK's get started?

Hey Brian,
Glad you like the tune. USK played our first gig in Feb 1996. I was
tired of all the whiny grunge rock that was being played here in
Halifax/Seattle North. After Pulp Fiction came out, I remember how
much fun I had learning guitar and playing surf as a youngin', so I
got a hold of a bassist (Brain), and drummer (Spunky...he said he'd
love to be in a surf band...followed by what is surf?), and it all
started there. We had no idea if there was any place for a surf band
out here, but it's been going gangbusters since day 1. To date we
have released 2 cassettes (out of print), "The Man From S.U.R.F."
CDep, "el Toro!" 45ep, and "Get Instro-MeNTaL!"CD. We have a video
for "Giant Cow", been featured on umpteen comps, done movie/tv
soundtracks (even nominated for Canada's equivalent of an Oscar for
best sndtrck), and played countless gigs. Right now we're getting
ready to record another CD (Feb 2003), and release a live album.
(summer 2003) It's been a whole lotta fun!!! Oh yeah, all CDs/45s
are available from our web site (cheap commercial plug)
The surf secene up here is pretty small. There are no other surf
bands out here, and we were the first here on the East Coast. Toronto
has Atomic 7 (feat Brian Connoly of Shadowy Men), and Vancouver has
the Metalunas. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be a lot of
activity.
Thanks for asking,
Mike
Mike,
Sounds great! I heard you impressed Meat Loaf as well...ha-ha.
How did you get that guitar tone on El Torro?
Thanks,
BN

The "el Toro!" tone was a Strat Plus into a reissue Reverb Tank, into
a cranked Vibrasonic...from what I remember. It was pretty big and
ugly.
