Need HELP with 'REVERB' & more

Unsteady Freddie (schizofredric) - 04 Jul 2005 12:59:20

A dear friend a little over a year ago gave me an old 60's vintage
UNIVOX amp (single 15" speaker) - but it barely functioned
This shop in NYC FINALLY fixed it; when I go to pick it up, they
THEN tell me, 'sorry man we couldn't get the reverb tank to work;
it'll cost a lot more money to even try to get it work, no guarantees'
Kinda pissed me off b/c the whole point was to start playing guitar
again (havent played since the 1960's) and I was gonna teach myself
to play 'surf music'
Now here's the dilemma....do I spend the bucks to fix it? I think NO
is the way to go.
But if I take it as is (it sound pretty sweet), CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND
what I can ADD to give me accompanying FULL REVERB...an 'add-on'
unit, I suppose?
Obviously I could try and fing an old FENDER TANK, but is there
anything modern, or not that old that I could find slightly used (and
too expensive either as I am a neophyte)
Anything come to mind? I know this is the best YAHOO group to throw
out this question.
I also (OK I admit it) kinda SUCK as a guitarist, but eventually
it'll come back to me...maybe take some lessons, etc. Any
suggestions for the neophyte which guitar to start with? I'm
thinking an inexpensive STRAT. I have a 60's vintage VOX 'SUPER LYNX
DELUXE' hollow-body f-hole electric but the pick-ups work like shitty
microphones
So another question -- is it worth the $$$ to spend putting GOOD PICK-
UP's on this old ironhorse? I THINK "NO".
Thanks all of ya in advance for anything you post to help me with this
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

FREDDY!
that reverb is more then likely not very surf capable anyway, so for
playing surf purposes forget it. unless the amp is worth restoring of
course.
no such thing as real tube reverb for a few bucks - I'd get a semi-
convincing digital pedal for as little as possible (that would be a
Electro Harmonics holy grail or a digitech digiverb - the last one I
know and own, and it's not a tank, but its a great place to start.
Once you get the hang of it, you'll buy a real tank anyway, in any
case spending anything inbetween is money lost imho.
the squier sounds fine, but it might be worth pimping the oldie if
it's otherwise okay - Killer bannanaz get a freakin' awesome surf
sound with some old thinline hollowbody I couldn't identify. - don't
go on the mp3's on their site, which have crap sound. ask Ferenc, he
saw them too.
Does this mean that soon you'll be playing twang shebang live jingles?

Freddie,
I'd start asking your surf music buddies if they have any guitars you
can start on. Most guitarists have way too many guitars that don't get
played, and I bet they'd not only sell it to you cheap, but help you
set it up and give you some pointers in the bargain.
Good Luck

Sounds to me like, if you are gonna work at seriously playing, you should not
invest too
much money in your present equipment. You'll want to upgrade your amp, probably,
sometime in the near future (unless it sounds really bitchin', and I haven't
heard a UNIVOX
yet that does). It's not unusual for am amp tech to not fix an ancilliary
circuit like the
reverb or tremelo - when they go wonky, it is usually damn expensive to get them
repaired.
If I was in your shoes, I'd buy a little reverb pedal (a Danelectro mini pedal @
$35).
Popping for a pricier Holy Grail pedal doesn't make a lot of sense - with that,
you are well
on your way to buying an actual Fender '63 Reverb Reissue (about $425), so you
might as
well save for that if your are gonna spend serious bucks.
As for the guitar, you need to really evaluate your goals. Is it good enough to
play for 6
months? A year? Have someone who does play check it out - if the playability is
good,
yeah, go ahead and pop for some pickups.
If you want a low-cost Fender, I highly recommend the Mexican Standard Strat. I
got one
for $400 bucks with a wonderful two-tone sparkle paint job (it changes color,
depending
on the viewing angle). And, I play it all the time. Sounds great! I have some
other serious
guitars, but just like the feel and playability of this one.
I'd stay away from Squires. Every one I have played lately had awful fret work
on the neck,
making them a pain to play (literally). I know others defend them, but the
quality control
on the Squiers is terrible IMHO. For $100 more, get a much nicer Mexi Strat. The
more
comfortable and happy you are with the guitar, the more you will practice.
Period.
With all the surf bands you work with, you might also ask around for some
little-used gear
that they want to sell off cheaply, or even give away. You can always ask the
members of
this group if a potential "bargain" is really a good deal - or a ripoff.
