Off-topic: Epiphone guitars?

Richard (errant_jedi) - 04 Jul 2005 12:17:32

I was wondering what the list members here think of
Epiphone guitars as opposed to other low end brands,
like Squier? I've got a jones for an SG but I'm
reluctant to pop for a Gibson when an Epi can be had
few a few hundred bucks. I know that if I wanted a
Strat or a Tele I could get a Mexi or Jap model and be
happy with it. Unfortunately I don't have access to
any Epi's at any of the local stores.

I've never had a major problem with an Epi, but I haven't tried the SG
model. In general, I find that they're great guitars for the money.
You'll probably find that it's the same as any lower end guitar. The
tuners are slightly lower quality, the pickups aren't quite as hot, and
the body wood is a bit lighter. Same deal as I've found with the Squires
really.

richard:
I once owned a 1970s Japan-made Epiphone Coronet. It was a
great guitar, especially since I bought it for $25 used at
a garage sale! Nice twang and decent crafstmanship. My
buddy currently owns one of the new Epiphone "PRS" (Paul
Reed Smith) style "player" guitars...excellent quality for
the price.
I haven't played the Epi SG style...but, overall the Epi
price/quality charachteristics are very good.

Older epi's i saw were fine. I had one from mid/late ninetys a riviera
335 copy, and was a bit disappointed after all. frets had a very rough
surface right from the factory, making bends sound lik nails on
blackboard, and the waxpotted humbuckers screamed
dimarzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzio metal sound.
on the other hands, over the years I have seen shitloads of great jap
SGcopys fly by - from Ibanez lawsuit period to Maya, melody and stuff
like that - many of those were really decent qualitity - i'd sooner be
on the lookout for one of those then get a relativly new epi. but if
you do, play before you buy!
my 2 cents

Richard,
The "normal" Epi guitars (from Korea) are OK. But if
you want better than OK, consider the Epi Elitist
(Elite) line of guitars. These are essentially Gibsons
made in Japan that cost about lil less than half the
Gibson price. I own an Epi Elite '62 Dot Neck 335 made
in the Terada factory in Japan...pro quality thru and
thru.

> Hi,
I remember the "Tijuana Bibles" playing a pink SG with a Bigsby
trem. This sounded mighty fine. Heck I even played a Les Paul for
some surf tunes, sounded o.k. by the way. The Epi 335 with trem is
also nice imo.
I always found Epi's to be more guitar for their bucks then Squiers.
Although they are a bit more expensive then the average squier.
But the "Humbuckers" of the Epi's do sounds nice when reverb
drenched.
