Bruce's Strat Mod was Re: Gretsch with a tank

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 03 Jul 2005 19:28:53

Bruce,
Wouldn't you want to swap the middle pickup with one of the neck or
bridge pickups first? That way if you were going to run primarily the
neck and bridge pickups together the pickups would hum cancel (like a
Jag/JM).
Also you woudn't necessarily need to replace the 5-way switch with a
3-way...you could reuse it, albeit it may be confusing.
Good ideas.
Thanks,
BN

Brian, I've done what you suggested, but, it's still not as good as having all 7
combos available, not to mention, having Tone Control on all 3 pickups. If you
look at this wiring diagram, you'll see it's simplicity at its most elegant,
which is one reason I like it! You can still wire the reverse pickup in either
bridge or middle position, but with this wiring, you keep a 100% stock
appearance while enjoying every possible sound the Strat is capable of making!

Bruce,
I think BN meant: do both! have humcanceling in BN (!!!!)
combination, and either BM or NM (whichever you use most) instead of
the two M-combo's.
btw, that wiring scheme is brilliant! very sweet solution to two
problems at once - genious.
unfortunatly, I have to take out the top volume control because it
gets in the way of my playing.

Yeah that's what I meant Bruce...do your mod, but also swap the middle
and bridge pickups (for example)...to get hum cancelling in the
neck/bridge position like a JM/Jag. I like your idea.

Gotcha, but, not all Strat p/u sets are done the same, so I would only do that
when I know for a fact that the middle p/u is reverse-wound. But, this is
another simple answer that fits neatly with the other stuff I mentioned!

good point, which brings to mind that there are also sets with an
extra hot bridge pup - you'd want to keep that in place anyway i
guess.
WR - fully endorsing a pro-strat thread ;-)
