I met with Eric Johnson for 10-15 minutes last night after his show In
Sun Valley. As everyone who has met him has said, he's one of the
most down to earth guys you'll ever meet. I felt bad for him because
there were a bunch of sound problems. The right main blew part way
first his first song, which they got back running fairly quickly.
Then his mic was feeding back on his first vocal and he kept waving
off and it turned into an instrumental. They eventually got it sortof
fixed but it still was squealing a little the whole show. He's such a
perfectionist that I'm sure he was pretty peeved, but you'd never know
it when we talked. Buddy Guy came on after Eric and that was a killer
show. His band is so tight and he's a total trip. Anyway, I posted a
photo of Eric and I in the "Who's Who" section of photos, so you can
see my ugly ass

I also saw Eric Johnson backstage at a show the other day. A kid with a balloon
was walking by and Eric popped the balloon...the bastard!

Excellent Shawn! Too cool.
Did you happen to sneak a surf cd in his shirt pocket?

I never thought of doing that :-) He did get a copy of demo stuff of
mine. He said he had already listened to some of them that were
forwarded via email and dug them. The cd had my song from the Surf
comp on it, so maybe he'll record that (yeah, right...)

Who in the hell is Eric Johnson and why do you people talk about him so
much? I did a google search and saw he played on a Richard Marx album.

Eric Johnson?
Ah, well, I guess you could say he's probably one of the hottest living guitar
players on the face of this earth.
Then again, that's just an opinion, but, it's my opinion............

Some might say the same about Joe Satriani. I was just curious if he
ever did anything remotely surfish to be talked about so often.

I don't think we've talked about him "often." I brought him up a few
weeks ago when I found out he was playing here and I was going to get
to meet him.
I heard from his kid brother's best friend his underlying passion was to become
a surf purist and join Yahoo groups and make sure nobody mentions Eric
Johnson..............

While Eric Johnson doesn't do anything really surfy, he's held in high
esteem simply because he's a legendary guitarist with magnificent tone
and enviable expressive ability. He's not a prolific artist, and he's
something of an enigma, so any mention of him creates considerable
buzz throughout the guitar playing community, regardless of genre.

I was just curious if he (Eric Johnson) ever did anything remotely surfish to be
talked about
so often.
I think he went wakeboarding on Lake Travis in Austin once. ;-) And I think
there is a narly
point break below the Cliffs of Dover - maybe Eric's most famous tune was
inspired by
barreling British waves!
BTW, I have a guitar (ARIA T-70, an ES-335 clone) signed by Eric on one of his
trips
through Colorado. He was very gracious when I met him, and complimented me on
the
guitar, which is indeed a good one. We did not discuss which scales and chords
emitted
the best surf vibes, however. Wish we'd have had the time...
P.S. I think many of us would be curious to know if the Eric Johnson Model Strat
would
make a good surf axe. Seems like a lot of careful thought and Custom Shop-know
how
went into the design of this production vintage/modern hybrid guitar.

Well, just to head any potential problems off...
I think most people here would agree Eric Johnson is pretty off
topic. So unless he is doing something with regard to surf music,
I'd rather not talk about him here.
Having said that, Shawn Martin is a list member I hold in high
esteem, and if he wants to share the fact that he got to meet Mr.
Johnson and even got his picture taken with him, then that is
totally cool. I'd like to think we are all kind of friends on some
level, and that's what friends do...share. He was even kind enough
to put "Non-Surf" in the subject line. No harm, no foul. If Shawn
were to meet and talk about a non-surf celebrity every week...that
would be another matter.
Note well => :-)
For all your Eric Johnson needs there are other lists that are more
free form, anything goes types of lists (whether stated in their
charter or not). I don't want this list to be like that though.
Peace out,
BN
