Catching up...

Bill Bergstrom (surfbandbill) - 02 Jul 2005 17:40:58

Hey all,
Been lurking for the last week or so and wanted to chime in on a
few little whatnots.
1) I am a high school English teacher. Had to finally toss that
out there..... Being freshly credentialed, I'm still "green" but
I am loving it so far, and this summer has given me a chance to
catch up on some much-wanted music work.
2) "Excellent" Mosrites (as being sold by the Zamm guy) are
phenomenal. I've had mine for a little over a year and can't put
it down. They play smooth, the neck is great and not as narrow as
an original vintage neck, and the pickups are hot as all hell.
3) Tanks: Having played through Ferenc's tank at the Surf Battle,
his seemed to be deeper and wetter than any tank I've played on -
and I have both a '66 and a RI. Now, my question along with that
is... my '66 is fairly new to me, and while it has all the mojo, it
also has a little rattle if I let a note ring/decay. Do you think
that is a result of tubes or springs? I would tend to guess tubes,
just because the springs react fine with the original "chunk" and
everything - it's just in the decay. My RI seems to have more "space"
while my vintage tank has more attack. Can't figure it yet, but I
think it's something with the vintage, since it got a little tossed
about in shipment.
4) I really disliked Fender flats. Put them on my JM once, thought
they were crap, took them off. Not that I'm the final word at all,
but just had to throw that out there.
5) $600 is too much for a '75 Dual Showman. Just last year I picked
up a BF '67 for $550. The key is patience and constantly watching the
lists. I think I spent 8 months until I picked mine up, but I
probably saved two or three hundy on it.
6) Last one, I swear -- I am putting the wraps on a custom guitar
project of my own, and will have photos posted as soon as I "finish
the finish" - I got a '67 Bronco for maybe $125 I think, and the guy
had a mini humbucker for the solo pickup (blashpemy!), it had a tele
bridge (no whammy -- double blasphemy!!!), and a really shoddy red
spraypaint finish (put the "ugh" in "ugly", esp. with a black
pickguard). So I had to rout the body a bit, but I fit a Duncan Twang-
Banger pickup in there, put on a Bigsby with a Mustang Bridge, and am
in the process of shooting it Olympic White. When I assembled it w/o
the finish, it sounds like a monster. I just can't believe I have to
wait another 2 months until it dries for "practical use".
Okay, that's it. Props on all the bass talk recently - I found it
fascinating, especially as I start my bass-playing duty in the new
band on Wednesday.
Keep the surf up!
~Bill~
