Brian, "Burnin' Rubber" (not the same song done by the Surfaris) is on
several comps including Muscle Bustle (Ace Records), Surf and Drag Vol.
1 (Sundazed) and Lost Legends Of Surf Guitar Vol. 2 (Sundazed). Here's
some info on the band from the Muscle Bustle liners by Rob Burt:
"On the instrumental front, Gene Moles and the Softwinds became one of
the most under-rated instrumentalists of the surf era. The Surfaris,
the Ventures and the Challengers all covered Gene Moles' original work.
However, a big chart placing seemed to evade the multi-talented Moles
and his group. Their two near-hits came via "Kaha Huna" (goddess of
surfing) on the Garpax label, followed by "Burnin' Rubber" b/w "Twin
Pipes" on Challenge. When the mid-60s Batman craze swept America, they
tried their luck again and reissued the latter tracks as "Batmobile"
and "Batusi", as the Bats on the Flame label, again without any real
success."

Isn't it true that Gene Moles was a session guitarist in Bakersfield
and was the official "guitar tester" and assembly line inspector for
the early Mosrites?
