Re: [SurfGuitar101] Ranking 60's Bands: "The List" goes on

DP (noetical1) - 01 Jul 2005 21:36:38

i am always down for some pointless activity:
1. Dick Dale "Surfer's Choice": I don't think there would
be "surf music" without Mr. Dale...evryone who was there at
the time went to the Rendevous, everyone owned "Surfer's
Choice"...and knew the words to "Peppermint Man"...the
Reverb Unit, The Showman, The Beast Stratocaster...the
glissando, the fiery-double-picking...the first truly
"surf" LP...Dick originated it all.
2. Challengers "Surf Beat": it seems like everyone I talk
to who was a young person back in 1960-1963 has this album,
and remembers seeing the Challengers play all around SoCal.
3. Chantays"Pipeline": this single (and album) turned surf
into a nationwide phenomenon. Both "Pipeline" and "Wayward
Nile" are eternal and timeless, and in my book both are
"perfect" surf tunes.
4. The Lively Ones "Surf Rider": another album that every
"old-timer" seems to still have in their collection.
Another band that everyone seems to have witnessed live
back in the day.
5.The Ventures: their popularity (and influence) was
immense. Everyone owned a Ventures LP, no matter where they
lived...everyone knows "Walk, Don't Run".
6.The Beach Boys: their instrumental output was meager,
their influence-immense.
7. Santo and Johnny "Sleepwalk": absolute proto-surf, this
song was the de riguer "last song" at countless gigs and
shows.
8. The Belairs: (going out on a limb here) surf was
invented down in OC...the Belairs rode that wave well...
9. The Sentinels, The Centurians, The Tornadoes, the
Pyramids, The Crossfires: five way tie. The frontline foot
soilders of the surf revolution of 1960-1963. Down in the
trenches surf guitar.
10: The Surfaris "Wipe Out" & "Surfer Joe": hugely popular,
almost nationwide exposure.
well, there you have it,

"Slave Girl" aka "Cairo" was based on "Malaguena" and was the
inspiration for the Sentials' "Latin'ia."

The Belairs wrote and were playing "Mr. Moto" over a year before Dick
Dale's first Rendezvous gig, and recorded it 3 months before Dale
played his first instro live.
> 9. The Sentinels...
Not picking on you DP, but I've seen the name spelled wrong 3 times in
the last couple of days - SENTINALS with an "a"

DP (noetical1) - 02 Jul 2005 01:02:42

Phil:
I don't get what the "Slave
Girl"/"Cairo"/"Maleguena"/"Latin'ia" reference means... did
"Latin'ia" precede or influence "Sleepwalk"?
Or did all those tunes lead up to "surf"? should the
Roubanis version of "Miserlou" be included on that list?
What are you meaning?...I don't get it...
re: the Belairs...yeah, I know they wrote and played Mr.
Moto first, and I'm sure Mr. Moto was a huge influence on
many (maybe even on DD himself)...but, like I said, I was
going out on a limb with that one...I think DD had a bigger
impact on the proto-surf-scene overall. Just an
unsupported bias, on my part, I suppose...and the
never-ending LA/OC rivalry...
re: SENTINALS (!!!)...thanks, I do think we owe the
originators the respect of spellin' their names correctly.
as always, most enlightening post,

"Sleep Walk" (two words, not one) was Santo and Johnny's biggest hit,
but aside from being instro and a fave among fans, its surf influence
is only tangential.
"Slave Girl" (also issued as "Cairo" with different mastering from the
same take) on the other hand, was the basis for Tommy Nunes' writing of
"Latin'ia," a true surf classic. "Slave Girl" was based on "Malaguena,"
also not surf, but commonly covered by surfbands.
No question Dick Dale had the biggest impact by miles and miles and
miles... just a point of history - being first is not equal to being
most influential or successful.

I'd agree, Dick Dale did after all "break up" the Belairs.

Double-Huh? The way Paul Johnson told the story on the Belairs compilation LP,
it was his argument with Eddie Bertrand over Bertrand's use of the new Fender
Reverb unit, (PJ thought that for Surf Music, DRY was better!) that led to
Bertrand leaving the Bel Airs and forming Eddie and The Showmen.

exactly! and who, singledhandedly, invented the reverb tank? huh?
just kidding, i didn't get it either, but maybe this is what bill
meant?
It would be cool if Dick changed his story - "yeah, so i got
competition from the bel-airs, so I told Leo to build a machine that
the bel-airs would break up over"

I think Bill was saying that Eddie wanted to pursue the Dick Dale
style of surf music more so than Paul did...hence the split.

the more wet sound.

...and that did not end the Belairs. Even after Paul left the band to
front the Galaxies, they replaced Paul with Steve Lotto on lead, and
changed the spelling of their name to the Bel-Aires, a lineup that
issued a single (Baggies c/w Charlie Chan).

Good God Phil LOL! I should have said "broke up the original
Belairs." There, that better! Seriously now... I was just using it
as a joke/sarcastic remark. I thought it was common knowledge that
Eddie left and started his own band because he wanted that wet sound
he was hearing on the Dick Dale stuff.
