Teachers and Surf Guitar

DP (noetical1) - 30 Jun 2005 13:16:54

Hey Group:
Well, here we are on Thursday June 30th...and if you were
wondering how I get the time to compose all these posts to
SG101, I'll clue you in:
SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER!!! YIPEEE!!! RIGHTEOUS!!!
So anyway, I was wondering...how many of you all out there
in SG101-land are a teacher of some sort?
I am currently a Junior High (Middle School: grade 7 & 8)
Science and Math teacher, and I have also taught electric
guitar and electric bass (and 'Rock Band') at High School.
I work in the Mojave Desert of California...and I am making
sure that No Child is Left Behind.
Anybody else out there teaching these days? What subjects
do you teach? What level or age cohort do you work with?
Any counselors or school administrators out there? Do you
have summer off? Wanna come over and rock out in the garage
and traumatize the neighborhood with multi-decibel
reverberation? Scare some cats?
on summer break,
-dp

Too bad I am too far away to join in, Surf/Rock/Blues/Gospel Fender Strat and
TELE player here. Actually while I was reading your post, I thought you were
going to suggest that we set up a network of Surf Guitar Teachers, like a
central database of surf slingers around the world. That would be cool too
wouldnt it?

Monty:
Well, the $$$ is nothing to write home about...but, the
work is way fun, and the vacation time (and benefits)
RULE!...maybe someday, I'll finish up the Masters degree or
Phd. and get a gig on the college scene...that might be a
lot cooler in the $$$ department.
Also, I've been considering school administration: a
superintendant in a local elementary school district here
just signed a contract for $250K per annum and killer
retirement benefits...it's big news around here...he's
earning better dough than either (California) Govenor
Schwarzenegger, or even President Bush...
I wonder if they let surf musicians run school districts?
I wonder if I'll ever have another day off if I turn
"Admin"? Decisions, decisions...
your reverberated teacher pal,

Hello DP;
I'm also a teacher - I teach economics at a college. So, I deal
mostly with 18-22-year-olds. Though I ostensibly get the summer
off, I'm doing SIX different summer teaching programs between May
and August that don't leave me that much time off - but the extra
pay is great! I'm at one right now, just north of NYC, sponsored by
the Foundation for Economic Education - this seminar is for the high-
school students, so it's the only time I get to hang out with 16 and
17-year-olds - a lot of fun!
I should mention that Larry White AKA Moon Dawg is also an economics
professor. I know the drummer for the defunct NY surf band the
Irreversible Slacks is also a college professor, teaching political
science, I think. There seems to be a lot of teachers in our
ranks...
Ivan
PS Wow, this list has really exploded the last two days! Very
cool! Of course, it happens when I'm away from home and can't
participate, dammit...

Sure, we could start off by compiling first by city state/province country
genres of surf/years exp. short bio/hours of availability/group lessons yes
no/price per hour. The data base should be a link section within this group with
contact info to email the teacher, could be for all musicians that teach surf
styles. bass drummers and keyboard players too. what do you all think, could we
pull this off? It would be cool to have artists from around the world all
providing quality surf lessons.

my teacher story:
when i was younger i started practicing in a recording studio. several rooms
were rented by different music artists too. an old man, i didnt know much
about him, except he was very friendly and refraining, gave guitar lessons to
a handful of students. later then i inherited a huge surf record collection, and
i
realized he had released lots of instrumentals thru the 60s and was also
among other things the guitarist for bert kaempfert from the 50s on. his name
ladi geisler. that was wow! man from the 40s. very into jazz, swing and blues
and much rocknroll. that time i had my first "real" guitar. a fender mustang 68
in creme, and since then he tought me many things with this six string
instrument. he is now 76 years old, still active in teaching and playing and
like
to talk about old times. for me it was a honour and i learned a lot. not only
playing surf. he needs to get in this database. recommendation: high.
localization: hamburg.
