I remember reading an interview at the beginning of a
Ventures tab book with one of the guys who said that
they did have an endorsement deal with Fender up to
the point that they started using the Mosrites. A
guitar teacher I once had actually accused Fender of
bombarding the young music market with images of it's
products via paid endorsements with bands (sort of
like the Microsoft of musical instruments) and implied
that most bands didn't use Fender at the beginning and
that most bands would not have if not for this. He
also called the Jaguar a "gimmicky student guitar" and
said that none of the "real" guys used Jaguars because
they were junk compared to the Strat. So...

Yeah, I quit taking lessons from him a couple of weeks
later. He was quite the snob and had a lot of
derision for everything I said I wanted to learn.

I'm quite sure they did have some kinda deal with Fender in the early days,
because their photograph was featured prominently in early 1960's Fender
literature.
