Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: The Lively Ones/mono (mastering to AM)

DP (noetical1) - 29 Jun 2005 17:24:11

phil....SHHHH!!!...you're giving out my secrets!!!
I master my stuff into a single 4" reference speaker...a
stereo mix running into a single speaker. it get's that AM
radio fidelity...especially on the bass and drum end of the
sound spectrum. but, it still sounds decent on a stereo
boom box or computer speakers.
I also like to compress and eq the final master mix, just
like in the olden days of 45 rpm singles. I prefer the
emulations of old mastering decks found in SONAR...good
stuff.

AM radio in the sixties:
*3dB max dynamic range courtesy of the program leveles (leveled
output gain, but did not compress dynamic range, though it was
the same general effect - you could hear them breathe!)
*5000 cps response max courtesy limitations of AM transmission
*2%+ distortion
all this on top of common 45 mastering for AM radio:
*5000 cps roll-off
*bass +6 dB
*less than 6 dB dynamic range
It was all about bass boom and squished sound to overcome road noise,
targeted at cheap 6x9 dash board mounted mono car speakers driven by 2
to 4 watt tube radios, which all created lots more distortion and loss.
For the cruiser, it all ran through an under-dash spring reverb that
crashed mercilessly when you hit even tiny bumps, and at railraod
crossings... look out!

...heee hee hee...he said "reverb"...
now who would ever want even more reverb on their tiny
little AM car radios? those crazy old-timey cruisers!...
like always, it was a pleasure to read your supremely
informative post...
