Re: The Lively Ones/mono

I think thats the problem with some of the reissued LPs/CDs of other
bands too. The original MONO recordings kickin ass, while the
rereleased records suckin with their stereo, a lot of power get lost.
fine example (it`s not surf I know): 13th floor elevators -
"psychedelic sounds of...". Mono version = POWER , stereo version =

I'm not gonna let this pro-mono talk get outta hand. Pet Sounds in stereo is
fantastic. I prefer even the discrete stereo of the early '60's like the
Ventures records with Mel's drums on one channel, the rhythm on the other side,
the lead in the middle and the bass probably on one side as well. And the
re-releases sounded even better when EMI went to the multitrack tapes and
remixed lot of those old recordings. The remix of The Ventures "In Space"
(paired on CD with the Telstar album) has much more uumph than the previous
stereo and mono versions.

Some bands have great stereo mixes, others like the Lively Ones
haven't, and it would have been nice to have their (hopefully better
sounding) mono mixes reissued instead of the bad stereo ones.

Yep. But, I`m also with Marty in the Ventures case, the rerelaesed
ones have a better sound quality, I bought the 100000 $
weekend/superpsychedelics and in comnparison to the original LPs, the
rereleased version sounds much better.

Phil Dirt (dirtkfjc) - 29 Jun 2005 06:37:26

Most of the power you detect in mono that's missing in stereo had to do
with the way mono was mastered for AM radio. 2 track was the deck of
choice, and mono was just a combination of the two with compression and
serious EQ applied during 45 mastering. You'll often find that LP mono
and single mono are quite different.
CD reissues sometimes don't get mastered, just duplicated, and too
often (as with Del-Fi), they use LP masters instead of session masters.

I do have to agree there, Klas. The Del Fi reissues of the albums in stereo were
awful. Fortunately Ace records found good mono masters.

I didn't know that the Ace reissue contained the mono mix! I now have
the 2004 Collectors' Choice (Rhino) CD, which is the stereo mix but
doesn't share the bad sound quality found on the original Del-Fi CD
reissue. I would have bought the Ace mono release instead if I just
knew.
