Surf - music theory and other geek speak

holyreveb - 28 Jun 2005 19:37:23

I wanted to know if this is the right place for this or should there be
a new group which just talks about music theory, composition,
influnces , books etc as it would apply to Surf music.

Rick Escobar? Of Woodies fame? Welcome back! I remember you were here
a while ago. Good to hear you are playing surf again and are back on
the list!
This is exactly the right place IMHO.

PS Sorry to hijack your thread, but:
So who backed you up at the Hotel Utah? I think I saw Ferenc in the
video clip...?
And if you aren't Rick Escobar then boy is my face red.

I say let's get into it bigtime. There's only so much we can say about string
gauges, reverb units and DD's personality. Some theory talk would sure do me
good!

Basically, this is the right place. Music theory does come up occasionally on
this list so hang on and if you have theory questions or comments, let's have
'em.
A list devoted strictly to Music theory and composition as it applies to Surf
would probably not remain particularly active after the first month. A more
general music theory list devoted to all musical genres could be active and one
may already exist.
The first theory of surf music is in answering the question "how much fun can
you have with a guitar?". After that, one could talk a bit about major and minor
chords, eastern scales and common chord patterns.

Rick,
As a composer (as well as guitarist & bassist) I'd
welcome more discussions about music theory. It would
make for a nice balance to all the recent fan talk
about bands and personalities!
If you've a question, fire away and lets see what
happens.
Meanwhile, I'm thinking of writing a surf tune with
IIm7-V-I changes in 7/4 time with a whole-step
modulation somewhere in the middle.... :-)

I'm in complete agreement here - I'd love to spend more time talking
about techniques and compositon. It's actually one of the reasons I
joined this group.

For me Surf tune is all about a melody, I always try start from that
point of view. So what people here use for a souce of melody.

I would like to chime in on this subject. I have used past and present
experiences as a surfer to help me visualize my tune with what I end up
naming the tune as well. For instance, I have surfed a break called Killer
Dunes so I wrote a version of what I want it to sound like. I also wrote a
tune in the key of G and named it G-Land from the well known surf spot
located in Indo. I like to create my tune around the name of a song, but not
always. Sometimes it helps to "visualize" before you start plucking.
