Help! Tech question about MIA Jazzmaster pickups.

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 28 Jun 2005 09:52:37

I was laying out my Jazzmaster project guitar, and I got the MIA Jazzmaster
pickups mixed
up. Can anyone tell me, which is the bridge and which is the neck? One has a
blue dot on
it, the other a red one.

I think Fender's convention is that red means bridge and blue means
neck. But...to be sure, measure the resistance of the pickup with an
multimeter. The bridge pickup will have higher resistance (Ohms).
The string doesn't vibrate as much back toward the bridge so bridge
pickups are wound hotter (more windings) to match the volume of the
neck pickup. More windings means more resistance.
Good luck with your project!

Aren't the wires different colors? With my AV Jaguar pickups I got a
wiring diagram. Also on the AV Jag pickups a yellow wire signifies
neck pickup and white signifies bridge, I think.

No, same colors. White/black.

Weird, the resistance is nearly identical in the two. There was a slightly
higher reading on
the meter for the blue than the red (8.26 Vs. 8.23), so I am putting the blue at
the bridge.
Thanks for the reminder, which I should have known on my own.
Adios!

I suppose they might make them nearly identical. In that case, the red
& blue dot's would just be used to indicate which one is reverse
wound, reverse polarity so that they hum cancel when both are on.

Thanks...since both measured the same on my ohm meter, I figured it didn't
matter nearly
as much as I thought. But I greatly appreciate "insider" know-how.
Many thanks!
