Hey, Marty,
that is funny, that's actually one of the not so many first wave
albums I have, and I wouldn't have thought of categorizing as being
on the darker side.
probably because I'd compare it to a lot of now surf music, as
opposed to other first wave stuff, when I guess it would fall in the
dark and heavy category, what do you think?
It's a great album indeed, and available too, for a reasonable price.

PS, note that I changed the subjectline, discuss 60's surf music, and
adress a list member directly in person. All in one post! Am I
learning or what? ;-)

I listened to the clips available on Amazon today, and have to
concur... it is "good" but not dark, or at least not the kind of dark
I am thinking of. I'm trying to learn all I can about music,
especially surf music, so bear with my layman's terms here.
The stuff that most does it for me is, I think, using a lot of minor
chords and eastern or flamenco scales. The Blazers' songs "Bangalore"
and "Sound of Mecca" are perfect examples. As for the tone, I love
the deep reverb when it creates a ghost-like sound. The rapid picking
in the Fender IV's "Mar Gaya" is what I'm talking about here. Its not
surf music per se, but Hammerhead's "Gremlin Stomp" also has that kind
of eerie, high-pitched screaming sound.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I will be abusing my credit in the
near future. Also hope to be checking out the events around
Huntington Beach, etc. This list has already been worth more than
twice the signup fees! (yep just kidding)

Hello Rob;
Allow me to humbly suggest my own band the Madeira - we're going for
that flamenco/north-african take on surf music. You can hear a few of
our samples here:
The mp3s are just from a practice session, but sound OK. Check out
the song El Caliph first.
Thanks.

Rob, welcome to the group. That "stuff" you are talking about also
does it for me and is what really drew me into surf music. Luckily for
us, that latin/middle eastern/exotic flavor is all over surf music.
Have you heard Latin'ia by the Sentinels?
I would second the suggestion of trying to get a hold of some Treble
Spankers stuff. They nailed that middle eastern/asian type of melody.
And I'm glad Ivan mentioned his new band The Maderia. Also check out
his old band The Space Cossacks. The Atlantics from Australia also
come to mind.
Check out the following Dick Dale tunes: Misirlou, The Victor, Hava
Nagila, Esperanza...
How about The Surf Coasters "Intruder"? That's a raging tribute to
Dick Dale in my mind.
For a really cool marriage of Jewish folk music and surf, check out
Mel Waldorf's "Meshugga Beach Party" CD...totally killer. Those folk
tunes really lend themselves to surf with their minor/exotic melodies.
Go to the audio page and listen to the reverbed sounds of "Sherele",
for example.
I'm sure I'm leaving out a ton of songs done in that style.
