Guitar Choice

tiki_charlie - 27 Jun 2005 14:22:16

Hi all,
I want to buy a new guitar and looking at the old Polls have noticed
that the Fender Strat and Jaguar are the main choice, unfortunatley
for some reason I'm leaning towards a Gretsch because at the moment I
prefer the look of them. I know that it's all down to the person who's
actually playing the guitar as to how good it sounds but does the
choice of guitar make a difference to the sound? This probably sounds
like a stupid question but I've only been playing the guitar for a
while and I'm still a novice when it comes to all the technical stuff.

Hi,
fender single coil guitars seem to be the first choice, but ain't
nothing wrong with a gretch. two considerations count in my book.
- if it sounds like you want to sound, it's go, no matter what anyone
else thinks.
- If it makes you feel kick ass when you hold it, it's gonna make you
play better.
I'd say listen to at least some different bands with different guitars
before making a choice. Brian Setzer's ound, COULD be used for surf I
guess, El Ray (sweden I think, they have a website somewhere) use a
gretch, and I think at least one member here on the list, who is also
on the mp3 comp. I'd check those out and see if you like that sound.
good luck, and let us know what you get!

Brian Connelly of Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet used a Gretsch I believe.
Not necessarily "Surf" but great Instrumental Rock anyway...

Of all the non-single coils, the Gretsch Tennessean sounds the best IMO.
Although pricey.
Also listen to Brian Connelly - Shadowy Men and Atomic 7. Certainly not a
traditional surf
tone, but sweet none-the-less.

Tidbit 27683:
We have a really cool Gretch-based Rockabilly band here in San Jose
called Los High-Tops who intersperse and play a more Setzer-style
Gretch-based Surf as part of their primarily Rockabilly shows.
Check 'em out!

I think a Gretsch can make a fine surf guitar - Paul Galaxy of The Galactics
uses an orange
Gretsch Nashville and plays some rockin' good original surf through a Bassman
amp. So,
clearly, it can be done!
I think one great thing about surf is, since you don't crank up the distortion,
the
hollowbody guitars are not so susceptible to feedback problems.
I've wondered what the new Electromatic series guitars sound like - they look
good, and
affordable. There is also a solid body Nashville out now - must weigh a ton! The
Duo Jet
and new Fire Jet probably create a cool surf tone, but I don't know for sure. I
think they
have humbuckers, which tend to be shunned among surf players.
Best wishes, whatever you play. Fender still rules the surf, however!

I used a Duo Jet with Dynasonic pups on all three of these songs...

I say as long as your Gretsch has single coil pickups you'll be
alright. My first choice would be a Duo with single coils ala Cliff
Gallup or Nor Cal Hodad. I've got a 6120 with filtertrons and it's
not the best "surf guitar."

Starcrunch got some awesome tone out of his Gretsch.

I remember from Ansigod's old web page that in the early MoAM? days,
Star Crunch used a Gretsch Tennessean and a Jazzmaster. At some point
he switched to using the Mosrite...I'm not really sure when that
happened though...I'd love to know.

I have a bootleg MoAM? VHS tape and Star Crunch plays the Gretsch for
nearly the entire show. Really awesome. The video also has Dr. Delecto
playing the Mosrite, organ, and bass.
All I know is the tone on Destroy All Astro-Men is one of the great
guitar tones. That album is amazing. The solo on Bermuda Triangle
Shorts is one of my all-time favorite. And the guitar on The
Heavies(Surf the River of Blood) is awesome. I would love to hear the
Ventures version of that.
