Getting Atlantics albums

Richard (errant_jedi) - 24 Jun 2005 12:39:55

I just bid on an Atlantics album on eBay without
really bothering to check their availability. Has any
of their stuff been reissued or is buying the old
stuff where you can find it the only way to go?

There are 2 CD's on Cane Toad records called "Complete CBS Recordings
Volumes 1 & 2". Ivan turned me on to those. I believe they cover their
surfy-instro period that we would be interested in. It's a great
overview with great liner notes.
They have some excellent songs in their catalog: Express to Baghdad,
Shark Attack, War of the Worlds, Bombora, The Crusher, and about a
zillion songs that end in "Stomp" :-)

I think Volume One is far superior & pretty much a must-have.

They have a website, www.TheAtlantics.com. They reformed as a band for the
Sydney
Olympics in Australia, adding a new guitarist named Martin Cilia. He's been the
driving
force in their recent releases & song writing. They perform in Australia. I
wrote Martin (he
did a nice tab book of their album "Flight of the Surf Guitar") and he wrote me
back and
even sent me picks and stickers.
I am very much a fan of their new stuff - not as adventurous and experimental as
their old
originals, but very good nevertheless. There's a new album being promoted on
their site.

as far as I know, they are still in Australia & put out a "new" album in the
last year or two containing some new songs as well as "do overs" of some of
their classics. I think the guitars sound ok, but the drums sound like poo,
and by poo I mean a mid-70s Steely Dan or Eagles drum sound, which was great
for those bands, but not for "Bombora" or "The Crusher."

Freddie,
What Jim and Gavin said. I am not yet familiar with their new
material, but some of their older 60's stuff is *the* shit. There is
some filler on that CBS Recordings 2 disc set, but when you realize
they put out something like 3 albums in less than a year you can see
why. They were very ahead of their time. War of the Worlds was
originally titled "World War III", which the record label didn't like.
It's a mini surf opera complete with a cacaphony in the middle of the
song to represent the war. They used reverb, echo, and pick scrapes to
great effect. They are one of the bands I'd love to go back in time to
see. Klas posted a link to some BBC newsreel footage that featured
them playing. It was incredible. Search the archives for that. They
were monster players and could really simulate the crushing waves and
fury of the surf. A monster band. Furious rhythm guitar and pounding
drums...it's way cool....I urge everyone to check them out.
The Space Cossacks covered several of their songs (Bombora and The
Crusher), and Ivan's new band The Madeira has continued that tradition
(I've heard them play Express to Baghdad and Giant). You can listen to
The Madeira's version of "Express to Baghdad" here:
Ivan is obviously a big fan and has posted in the past reviews of
their recent material. I recall he did recommend their new stuff. But,
like Gavin said, the main songwriter now is a new guy who replaced one
of the 2 guitar players from back in the day.
From their early catalog, check out: Bombora, Shark Attack, The
Crusher, War of the Worlds, Express to Baghdad, Giant, SOS, Stompede,
...they've got some great material. Very melodic and very
powerful....and really out there. Listen to SOS or Stompede...just
very unusually weird and cool *rocking* music with hypnotic pulsing
bass lines, pick scrapes, driving guitars, crazy drumming...it's
insane stuff! They are kind of a hybrid of Shadows and American surf,
but definitely have their own sound and style. I can't say enough good
things about them.
I am sure Ivan can add a ton to what we've said so far... ;-)
BN
PS Note that The Atlantics "Bombora" is not the same song as The
(Original) Surfaris "Bombora" - different tunes, same name.

BTW, now that I am home, I can quote the exact names of the discs I have:
The Atlantics: The Complete CBS Recordings '63-'65 Volume 1
Canetoad Records CD-004
Australia
The Atlantics: The Complete CBS Recordings '63-'65 Volume 2
Canetoad Records CD-005
Australia
Cool stuff!
Oh yeah, forgot to mention another gem of theirs: Arabian Surf !!!
Killer song.

That's "Flight of the Surf Guitar." It's one of my fav surf cds but
the recording quality isn't great...much better than "Point Zero",
their most recent cd. That one sounds horrible.

P.S. the Atlantics just did the backing tracks to a surf DVD called "Flight of
the Surf Dogs."
It has footage of the band performing as a DVD bonus. I ain't seen it yet, but
thought
somebody who can't stop themselves from buying everything ever released about
surf
music might want to know. (You hearing me, BN?)
Check it at www.theatlantics.com.
