As a resident of the SF bay area and thus a beneficiary of Ferenc's
good works, I want to
add my appreciation to this thread. He's had his hand in almost all
the great surf music
gigs I've seen this past year. I think he's being modest when he says
he is only doing what
any one can do. One has to know the bands, know club owners, have the
credibility that
comes with being in their own (in this case especially) top notch
band, and the most
importantly, willing to commit the time and energy that's left over
from one's own artistic
pursuits. Considering how hard it is just to get by financially here
in the Bay Area, it's even
more impressive when someone can devote so much free time to
furthering the good
cause of Surf music - to all our benefit. Ferenc - you're a real
inspiration! Keep it up.
As for Eddie and the Showman - I just recently picked up the Squad
Car CD from
musicstack.com - for $12. That's a website that numerous small record
stores post their
inventory, not unlike the used section of Amazon. It's hit or miss,
but that time I hit big.
Since it's out of print, I think I can make the offer to trade copies
of this CD with anyone
out there who'd like a copy. I don't have any of the comps or CD's
listed in the recent
thread about 60's music, so if you want to trade CDR's, contact me
off list and we'll swap.
Danny
I follow Danny's sentiments and agree completely with all this sincere
kudos.
In addition to the creative triumphs of Pollo Del Mar, which stand on
their own, Ferenc is our West Coast "Bill Graham" and simply put, we're
not worthy! But we ARE worthy of supporting his initiatives with our
attendance. And if everyone did what I recently did on behalf of Surf,
Ferenc would love it, I'm sure.
Because I am in several music "scenes", last Sunday two people from the
Folk Fest which had been simultaneously happening in San Francisco took
some time out to come see the Surf Battle. They didn't have to do this,
but since they trusted my judgment in music, they came and were blown
away! Now, I know that's not a lot, but if EVERYONE of the committed
Surf fans thought that way and did that for each event they would go to,
(simply recommending a Surf show to non-list friends/acquaintences)
think of what it would do for attendance and the scene! Some of those
people would even stay fans and some would even be inspired to form
bands.
The Del Mars performed THIS year in part because of their attendance at
other recent Hotel Utah events that Ferenc put together! Who knows who
was in the audience (Danny?) who will perform next?
I said this at the show last Sunday and maybe it's dreaming (right now),
but the KFJC Battle has the potential of becoming the "Burning Man" of
Surf music...a mecca for fans and bands every year. It has that kind of
magnetism.
Enough said. Ferenc, I never had a hat to remove in the first place.
Thanks for being so committed to Surf!
