Boom Boom Boom

Rick & Carol Selby (papoon72) - 23 Jun 2005 10:35:12

Well, they've done it again. Dave, Dusty and Sam, along with our favorite
chickens of the sea, Pollo del Mar, put on a tremendous (mandatory, hence I
was there...) show on Tuesday night at the Boom Boom Room in SF. I kept no
set list as the enjoyment factor was so great (and the room was pretty
dark), so I won't try to repiece it together from memory. PDM's opening
slot was cool and sophisticated, lapsed into wild and rockin' with Jeremy's
Bonzo drum solo with smiles all around. A bit of the automotive night with
Route 666, Cutlass Supreme and (I believe) Red Asphalt. Flash of Green is
so very nice as well. I loved it. And then the three piece wonder that is
Slacktone. It never ceases to amaze me just how hard all three of these
guys play - definitely a whole is greater than the sum of the parts thing.
On every song - except maybe Rell Sunn Aloha which is 'just' intensely
beautiful. Some side trips and explorations, as Dave described them, were
offered as well, including a tribute to Paul Johnson in the form of Mr.
Moto. It was great to get to hang with Paul the Pyronaut (who once again
provided my old ears with plugs) and his gal Sherry (apologies for any
misspelling/confusion); We went down to a 50's style burger joint and
observed both bands in pre-show fortification mode :) Great visiting with
Jeff, bass PDM, there and the always-outgoing Ferenc. Also fun chatting
with Matt Kora and meeting Stanitarium. Jaimie and Jim Thomas representing
the Mermen contingent were also fun to catch up with. So many great players
in one room at the same time! The surf scene is the best. Thanx to Guitar
Player for making this happen and Slacktone and Pollo del Mar for doing
what they do so well. Hopefully they'll do it in Portland as well sometime
soon.
Off to Florida for a week, hopefully not into another round of hurricane
madness,
Rick

Wow, what a great event!!!
I think it's important that we recognize one guy who's quietly
becoming the leading promoter of surf music today: Ferenc
Dobronyi. Check it out:
1) brought the Surf Coasters to the US not once, but TWICE in the
last two years!!
2) set up this show for Guitar Player magazine (yep, that was him)
3) brought Rick Escobar out of surf music retirement and played
rhythm guitar for him in the new Woodies (probably got the rest of
the musicians together, too!)
4) is producing truly incredible and adventurous music with Pollo
Del Mar for over ten years now.
5) produced a great trad surf album with the Mach IV.
6) released the Woodies on CD after the recordings sat around for
years
6) has designed many fantastic covers for many different surf bands
People, Ferenc deserves our greatest grattitude! A big round of
applause for him, and let's pray that his wife may continue to put
up with all these non-family activities!
Thank you, Ferenc!

Kudos to Ferenc for being an all around good guy. Thanks for bringing
the Surf Coasters my way.

Ferenc has said that he is only doing what anyone can do. The bottom line is
that he does it. I certainly want to join in the applause!

My hat is continually off to Ferenc. And the latest Pollo Del Mar CD
is truly awesome. Thanks Ferenc.
