Ivan, those are quite valid points you make. So, here is my position;
you are right, I for one know very little about sixties surf. Main
reasons being, I guess, lack of easily available cd's (remember I am in
Netherlands, and only got into surf the last 4 or 5 years or so), there
is SO MUCH awesome new surf stuff to buy which is very available on the
internet that I keep buying those instead. and then, as you said, new
surf is discussed a lot more here. Oh and, bands from now still play
(and dick of course!) So what happens, I'll hear about the bitch boys
or the infrareds or ... well too many to name, here, and want to buy
it - I'll see a band live, and buy their cd's - so much great surf
input, that there isn't much room in my head, or desire left, to start
digging around in 60's surf. it's the curse of relativly new surf
fans, there is just WAY TOO MUCH great surf music being made right now.
(okay, i don't really mean TOO much!)
Anway, i realized this was happening a couple of months ago, i actually
posted about it, and am trying to do something about it. But the thing
is, cd's are hard to find. I bought the belairs 2cd and surfaris.
allready had original surfaris, dick dale and a bunch of comps. (the
ones you metioned I actually dont think i have)
So now, i'm sort a stuck. What I mostly would want to get right now is
Eddie and the Showman, Fender4, astronauts. and whatever anyone's
advice is.
But, where can i get those? are they available on cd? which comps
should i look for that have those bands, other then the obvious songs?
About posting about 60's surf, i can only speak for myself, but I READ
about verything that is posted here, esp. on subjects I don't know much
about, like 60's surf, cause I WANT to know. But I don't post about it,
cause I don't know. as a matter of fact, i regularly cancel a post I am
typing because I realize halfway through that I either dont know what I
a matalking about, or am expressing a compketly uninformed opinion.
(disclaimer: which is not to say that i never post something that falls
in one of those categories, phew)
So, to conclude; more discussion about 60's surf would be welcomed by
me at least, I'll read and try to respond. And I very humbly ask for
advice on getting music from above mentioned bands, and anything
sixties surf that i should look out for, and where i can get it.
oh, let me rephrase that:

I'm with Wannes here. I desperately want to know more about the
early, hard to find Dick Dale stuff, but so far, except through the
kindness of my network of friends, I don't own any of the real
product. So I for one greatly appreciate the discussion even if I
can't contribute right now.
I also vote for a reissue of DD's early stuff!
The same goes for other 60's music. I have a hole here in my
collection of surf, but I am desparately trying to fill it. I am
finding that I really dig this era of surf music, and there are some
really shockingly great examples of music from some very obscure
bands.
Another good way to get edumacated on 60's surf is to listen to Phil
Dirt's radio show. You'll get a lot of good recent stuff but he
always plays some obscure gems that make me want to go research and
dig up more info on (e.g. Pintor by the Pharos (sp?), Balai Hai',
etc).
So let's continue this thread...what comps are available that
feature obscure 60's stuff? We did mention the American Surf
Treasures series a while ago. The Get a Board comp was also
mentioned. Try to find the Diggin' Out comp too. What else? I know I
am missing a few. Keep 'em coming!
And no hitting yourself with a wooden shoe Wannes. ;-)

Hi everybody. I think one sampler is really essential it`s "Wax `EM
Down" [The amazing hot rod cult] with artists like Frank Siantra Jr.
doin "The Beach girl and the monster" as a vocal [!) number. There`s
also Sandy Nelsons greatest track "Casbah" on it, it is just A ALL
KILLER NO FILLER Record. Other cool comps featuring awesome and
obscure Surf/instro stuff are Strummin Mental Part 1 and 2 released
via Crypt Records as Cd`s, holy cow...There is also a label called
Mr. Manicotti Records which released a couple of awesome 60s surf
stuff for example the fabulous "Waikiki Surf Battle". It is Trash but
I love it the record.
Puuhh, the list is really endless. To pick out one band I really love
are the AVENGER IV, they released an album on Dionysus some years
ago, featuring all of their hits. Dionysus is genereally a good
source for cool reissued surf stuff, to name some more great albums:
- "Wailin' in West Covina !" feat. The Hydraulic Raisins
The Rhthm Surfers,The Spetrums
- Al Garcia and The Rhythm Kings - "Exotic and Rockin' Instrumentals"
- Surf Teens - "Surfmania"
or some others...
-Pebbles Vol.4 "Summer means fun" vocal surf comp. feat. Gary Usher
The Rivieras,The Knights...
-various DelFI records [Impacts, Lively Ones....]
okay, hope that helps, SURF´S UP !

Something Marty said about band specific groups as the
place for really in depth conversations about songs...
There is a Dick Dale list on YahooGroups, but hardly
anyone ever posts there, and the info is usual about
his current tour. I am in no way suggesting that this
discussion be moved over there, but, I am willing to
bet that Dick keeps tabs on that group, and if he saw
how interested people were in his early stuff, he may
be more inclined to re-release it. Also, as Klas
pointed out, Sundazed is having some success with the
Lost Legends series... I am sure they have atleast
approached Dick about getting his early stuff on CD.
And, fwiw, Sam Bolle confirms that Dick has boxes of
his old albums boxed up at his ranch.

There's been some great suggestion on what to get. But the problem
is that Eddie & the Showman CD is impossible to find for a
reasonable price anymore. And The Fender IV CD was a very rare
Japanese issue. I have no idea where to find that stuff. In fact,
I don't even know who owns all those recordings, and if anybody
cares about them. I think it's perfectly reasonable to 1) scour the
illegal and semi-legal music sharing sites for these tracks or 2) to
get copies made from other surf fans. I've done more than my share,
I think, of hooking up others with CD copies of difficult-to-get
surf music.
But some of it IS available, I think. The Astronauts stuff was
released both by Bear Family in Germany (and I think it's still in
print) and an American label (Collectables?). My guess is it's easy
to find if you look around a bit. Much of the Eddie & the Showmen
stuff can be found on a Ace Records (UK) comp Toes On The Nose,
which I think may still be found. The Fender IV really only had 3
songs released: Mar Gaya, Everybody Up!, and Malibu Run. You can
find those on various comps. Discussing where to track down these
things is one thing that we should be able to do on this list.
Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine playing in a surf band and
not WANTING to find out more about the history of this great genre.
I'd love to see more enthusiasm among the musicians and fans for
discovering more about the rich history of this music we love.

Yep, I understand that. So, if you don't know much about it,
instead of posting with an opinion, why not post with a question?
Try to learn more about it, and push the discussion further.

Casbah rules! Awesome. It's also on the Toes On the Nose CD.
Some other LP comps:
The Surf Creature Vols. 1-3 - each one is chock full of lost diamonds
Surfin' in the Midwest - very good - Minnessota had great surf bands!
Surfer's Mood Vols. 1-3 - moodier stuff, some of it amazing
New Wave Surf Party - incredible, chock full of awesome surf music

I appreciate these suggestions, but I gotta say that I think most of
these are pretty lo-fi, and don't feature a lot of essential stuff.
In fact, for me, I'd say most of these comps are kinda boring.
Sorry! Strummin' Mental have so many pre-surf tracks that are
totally boring, just the same dumb I-IV-V progressions without
reverb, without anything interesting happening musicially, that it's
impossible for me to listen to them all the way through. Having
said that, both volumes do feature some diamonds (vol. 1: the
Scarlets' Stampede, the Thunderheads' Thunderhead, the Renegades'
Exotic, a few more; vol. 2: of course Mar Gaya and Squad Car, but
also the Motivations' The Birds, Gene Gray' Surfer's Mood, a few
more), but I would not recommend starting there. Waikiki Surf
Battle I find to be quite boring, without any bands of note.
Wax 'Em Down is pretty cool, though. But my recommendations would
be to start with the following comps (all on CD):
Toes On the Nose (Ace)
Wild Surf (Del-Fi)
Get a Board (Satan - affiliated with Dionysus?)
Kahuna Classics (K-Tel)
I think for most good sixties surf you just gotta get the individual
artists albums.
> Puuhh, the list is really endless. To pick out one band I really

The Avengers VI are a really cool band, and the Dionysus CD is a
complete collection. But I think they really only had three or four
great songs. Do we really need a surf version of "Downtown"?
Dionysus is genereally a good

Not really surf, I think.

Deke is high on these guys (he did the liner notes), but they did
not impress me at all. I think of them as a third-string surf
band. I don't think you can compare them to the Lively Ones, Jim
Messina & the Jesters, the Astronauts, etc.)

The Impacts also never did anything for me. Don't care for that
steel guitar.
Hey, Daniel is obviously more into the lo-fi end of the surf music
spectrum, and more power to him. Those of you that like that, his
suggestions are great. Those of you that don't, buy carefully...

Why don't we mount an email campaign to him directly? I know for a
fact that Dick does have all the master tapes to that stuff. If we
can appeal to his pocket book, how could he turn us down?

I bet you're right.

Wow... To get our paws on that....
Ivan
Wannes,
For a little while used copies of "Squad Car" were going for a semi-reasonable
price (less than $25) on Amazon, but Ivan's right--you can get all their best
songs on the "Toes on the Nose" comp, which is a little easier to come by.
There's currently a copy of Randy Holden's "Early Works" CD for sale at
www.gemm.com
You can find the Jim Messina & the Jesters/Adrian & the Sunsets CD at
www.bim-bam.com. That one's definitely worth getting--the Sunsets stuff is
totally unremarkable but the Jesters were amazing. They also have Richie
Allen/Podolar's "Surfer's Slide," which is three of his LPs on one bootleg CD
... I think. It has 34 songs.
That site has a great selection--I think I saw "Squad Car" on there, too--but
the prices aren't always the greatest.
Hope this helps,

Yes, Ivan you are right when listening good ol surftrash at home, I
like the lo-fi stuff a lot, don`t ask me why, it`s just my taste. I
also like the lo-fi version of garagepunksters, so I`m a fan of The
Mummies, Supercharger, Necessary Evils and all that Garagepunk
unknown series [Teenage Shutdown, Back from the grave]. Anyway, when
I spinning some records when djing, I prefere the more powerfull,
surf stuff for sure, like 50 Footcombo, Los Banditos, Looney Tunes,
Man or Astroman ?, Treblemakers, Bomboras ["Savage Island" is lo-
fiish too], Ghastly ones, Jon & The Nightriders etc.
But talkin about other 60ts surf/instrumental groups available on
cd...The Tornadoes rerelease a couple of their music on cd these
days, The Champs (I know its rocknroll instros) are available on CD
via GeeDee Records, The Centurions - "Surfers Payama Party",
Sentinels (also more rocknroll than surf), Link Wray (of course no
surf), The Original Surfaris (on Sundazed too I think ?).
You can also get very cool EuroTwang on CD, for example "Instromania
Vol. 1/2"(GeeDee records).
One comp I also really dig, (perhaps why it was one of my first surf
cd`s ?) is "Surf War" (Sundazed), it contains some dull numbers, but
also some great stuff. anyway, 60ts instrumental/surf is a bottomless
pit and I`m glad that some of the stuff (lo-fi AND hi-fi) will be
released from time to time. It`s refreshing and the more I listening
to the original stuff, the more I get an impression what it`s all
about with surfmania.
okay, surfin` weekend everybody,
daniel
PS: "Surfin` Rampage" by The Chesterfield Kings is a great retro surf
album too...but Warning it contains vocal numbers.
I purchased a fancy CD-R from Randy Holden himself a few years ago. It
contains all of the Fender IV stuff ever recorded minus the one vocal
cut (that was written or co-written by the other guitar player). It
also has a couple more recent recordings, which are not in the trad
surf vein at all..more like psychedelic jammy epic type songs (think
Mermen or Surf Kings). It's not an official release or anything, just
a CD-R he is selling. The sound quality of the Fender IV's stuff is
pretty so-so; I've heard better sounding versions of the songs on
other comps. Still it's a good place to get your hands on the Fender
IV and your money is going right to Randy.

The Fender IV vocal track, "You Better Tell Me Now" is actually pretty
good and may be worth tracking down.
