RE: [cowabunga] KFJC Battle of the Bands

Dave Becker (novapup2001) - 20 Jun 2005 13:00:19

KFJC supporters All,
Everyone at the show, please add to this quick review of a KILLER show
at the Hotel Utah, San Francisco 6/19/05! Although we missed Phil Dirt,
Ferenc hosted another great event:
The DelMars
4-piece from Oakland, East bay, San Francisco. We witnessed a fine debut
at the KFJC battle. Raw trad, crunchy and fun. Classic covers and cool
keyboards.
The Coppertones
San Francisco sophomores with a powerful new drummer and album.
Coppertones Are GO! Pop garage sensibilities to a Surf trio format. Mike
Coppertone did his classic wireless romp through the audience with
easily the most colorful Hawaiian-style shirt of the show. Watch out,
Mike Coppertone is talking East coast tour with Teen Harlots.
The Aquamarines
Military precision with blazing new originals. Cool all-black uniforms
with Russian paratrooper berets. High intensity Telecaster surf. Ace
Cool Russ noted My Wonderful Shadow recently topping the Garage.com
list. Big Wave Dave joins the band on bass.
The Concaves
Masters of deep heavy Surf from Santa Cruz. The band now rounds out it
sound as a four piece (adding bass) and does tight crunchy modern
Longboarder original music with a deep ocean feel. The Concaves lock you
in the Green Room and throw away the key!
Drifting Sand
Surfing Band extraordinaire. With keyboards, witty vocals and flying
sharks, truly an entertaining band. Highlights were the Irish-tinted "I
Would Surf 500 Waves" with a "Cowabunga!" refrain and their
crowd-pleasing classic "Surfin' with Britney" who came up on stage to do
the Swim.
Surf Cinema
Great tight set from the mainstays of San Jose. The movies played so
fast you didn't even see them ;-) Heavy and crunchy. Hofner styled bass
guitar plays Surf!
The Neptunes
The Neptunes are now a fez-less 4-piece triple-threat double-neck ARMY!
Never have I seen them as tight and energetic than at this show. All
blazing tunes with trad roots. Tom's pounding bass and Steve's shades
exemplify the cool character of this bad-ass band.
The Pyronauts
The energy and charm of this Auburn, Califonia 4-piece is undeniable.
The stage antics, showmanship is great, the music is fever pitch
included Unleash The Fury and Hitchcock theme. Paul and Bob spooned up
to play each others guitars and of course Bass-string-breaker Brett
broke two before the band finished with Miserlou.
The Lava Rats
With their new bass player, San Francisco's Lava Rats played a solid,
hard-hitting set that culminated with very interesting Surf
interpretations of punk classics from The Clash and The Ramones.
Mosrites DO rock!
The Berzerkers
Solid veterans. Dino's James Bond saga would make you cry. So well
played, you felt like you were IN the movies. How he makes the
complexity look easy. He's a natural Surf guitarist.
Pollo Del Mar
Veterans PDM pull out all the Stops! After paving the room with Red
Asphalt, Ferenc rises off the ground, Jono and Jeff blast the house and
Jeremy melts the stage on drums. Spotlight on the Surf Coasters and
Slacktone tribute covers.
The Woodies
GREAT to see Rick Escobar take the stage once more and highlight the
classics from The Woodies. The backing band included PDM's Ferenc
(guitar) and Jeremy (drums) and John Hamilton (bass). The sound was even
deeper and Ferenc dialed in the classic Woodies tone - amazing! Rick
showed us some originals but smoked on Surfin w/Bernie and The Swami.
Whatta treat!
All performers were at the top of their game. I'm not gonna list them
all, but all the fans were there, too! Well documented, cameras flashing
all day. Good to see everyone enjoying themselves thoroughly. Living
history!
Cowabunga All!

Ferenc Dobronyi (ferencnd) - 20 Jun 2005 14:18:53

Just wanted to publicly thank all the bands, fans and
KFJC for coming together for an awesome afternoon, in
support of our favorite radio station. We raised $1200
for KFJC.
I am biased of course, but it was great to see one of
my heroes, Rick Escobar, get back to the surf music.
Rick in no way retired from music when The Woodies
broke up in 1996, and has produced music as diverse as
Hawaiian steel to solo accoustic to techno guitar
symphonies. He roared through 4 Woodies songs, a new
original, and an obscure instrumental that his older
brother played on in the mid-sixties called "Paisano".
For a last little encore, Rick showed how he as been
woodshedding with his guitar, when he played a Chet
Atkins style version of Pipeline, playing both rhythm
and lead at the same time.
It was a bit nostalgic for me to here the Woodies
music again, and as I looked out into the audience to
see some of the long time surf crowd- BWDave, Matt,
Doug, -- where was Bernie?, And really happy to see so
many new fans- yeah, the Utah was packed to the rim.
Thanks Dave for the re-cap, and it was great to see
you playing surf bass again with The Aquamarines.

Ferenc,
Fantastic news on the fundraiser! Congrats to all.
Although I'm gonna give you a public "We're Not Worthy" bow for your
efforts and stewardship of these events, a hearty thanks also goes to
KFJC radio and Phil Dirt, the Surf fans and Hotel Utah who have been
tenaciously dedicated to the Surf bands and the scene for years. Hats
off!
BW Dave
