I wanted to just mention something about the Rapiers. They're an
incredible band, probably thee very best British-instrumentals and
Shadows-style band in the world. But that's not all they do: they
can sing very well, they can do the pre-Mersey british beat stuff as
well as anybody (even the Kaisers), they can do the Mersey stuff
with multiple harmonies. I saw them play in '00 at Shadowmania in
London, backing Jet Harris (original bass player of the Shadows) and
doing a few songs by themselves. They were simply awesome. They
wore sharkskin suits with 'winkle-picker' shoes, and were
professional to a fault. Their lead guitarist Colin Pryce-Jones
will rival the most trad-obsessed US surf fan in the attention paid
to detail (I remember once he said that they would never put their
guitar cords through the strap - which can keep the cord from
unplugging from the guitar if you accidentally step on it - because
nobody did it back in the early sixties!) I have all of their CDs,
and a bit of their other stuff. Their most recent CD is a
masterpiece - it's called "You're Never Alone With The Rapiers", and
it features about half vocals, but the instros are almost all
originals, and are about the best British instros of the last forty
years. In fact, I will just finish by saying that the Rapiers were
actually able to make a living playing mostly sixties-style
instrumentals for the last 18 years - I think that's testament
enough to their immense talent (and is also why they have been a
mainstay at Bruce Welch's Shadowmania every time the event has been
held, which is six times since '98).
I'm on the Rapiers email list, and am friends with the guy that runs
it. The news of the death of Wayne Nicholls is just too shocking
for words, especially considering that his wife was also killed, and
that they left four children behind. It's devastating. The
instrumental world has lost a gem of a person. I very much hope
that the rest of the Rapiers will find the strength to carry on
without Wayne.
RIP
Ivan
