GHS Flatwounds

Jacob Dobner (jacobdobner) - 19 Jun 2005 19:02:04

Has anybody tried the GHS Precision Flatwounds. The below link has
them for 5.35 a pack or 12 for $57. I was just wondering if anybody
has tried these. I have never even heard of GHS making flatwounds.

I used GHS Flats on my old Japanese Jaguar, but quickly missed the bright tone I
associate
with D'Addario roundwounds. Overall, they played very nice but seemed
dull-sounding to
me. Maybe it is just my ear - seems cheap enough to give a try, tho! They could
be
markedly different on another guitar, even another Jaguar with different
pickups.

Thanks for the response Gavin. I can't play roundwounds anymore. I
just don't play as well on them and I love the sound of flatwounds.

"seems cheap enough to give a try, tho!"
that is I recently ordered a pack to try them out - imho, they suck
bigtime. no power edge like the steel d'Addario chromes, dull sounding,
not vintage mellow like nickel flats, but just dull like .. well, they
remined me a lot of the no brand strings that i used to buy that were
on the desk top at my local guitar store, for something like $2,50 a
set, back when i had no money and thought that made sense. the GHS feel
like that to - not very smooth surfaced, they feel a bit corroded in
comparison to chromes or pyramids, right out of the pack.
Of course - that's just what i think, and at $5 a set you should try
them out. what not works for me might work for you, and if nothing
else, you feel better paying for the more expensive strings next time.
btw, my (EU) internet string shop has just downed the price of chromes
from 11 to 9 euro, and they have pyramids for 11 euro. My local store
sells chromes for 15, but has a 3 for the price of 2 offer for all
strings, so that's okay>
