Surf-rock recordings by non-surf bands?

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 18 Jun 2005 20:38:15

Many, many artists from different genres have tapped into surf rock for
inspiration. Can
everyone interested contribute to a thread that lists surf songs by non-surf
bands?
Commentary is welcome, and nobody says they have to be good. But, state your
opinions
about their relative merits, perhaps as a grade. Please state if the songs are
original to the
bands, if you know.
I know, for one, that Greenday has busted out a few surf-inspired songs
including
Espionage (for the Austin Powers soundtrack) and "Last Ride In" from Nimrod.
"Espionage
has has a nice, hooky riff and is startlingly simple instructure - the horns
really make it
work much more than the band's guitar work. "Last Ride In" is a credible surf
tune,
reminiscent of the Surf Coasters version of "Baja," although not as beatuifully
rendered.
The use of a wood zylophone is a really nice touch, however.
And of course, The Pixies had several surf-inspired songs, like the one I just
learned,
Cecilia Ann, which is of course a cover of the original.
So, to start the list:
Greenday - "Last Ride In," original, from Nimrod; "Espionage" original, from
Austin Powers
soundtrack. Grade: B-
Pixies - "Cecilia Ann," cover, Bosanova? Grade - B+

Chris Isaak does a surf tune on his album Speak of the Devil. I don't
remember the title. It is one of the few albums of his I don't own or
haven't listened to.

I just rediscovered a song called Squid Omelet on the
The Queers album "Grow Up." Cool little surf tune
(with distortion) and simple. Wish I could write 'em
like that.

Bow Wow Wow, did a couple surfy/tribal drum songs
Adam and the Ants, same Drummer Bassist from BWW did a couple also I
heard, but have not heard them.
Not really surf. But Wall of VooDoo did a couple covers of
Morricone's Spaghetti Western songs. And a bad ass Psyched up
version of "Ring of Fire" has Vocals, but guitar makes the hair on my
arm and neck stand up.
