Eric Johnson / Jerry Reed

Robb Lowe (robbhatesit) - 17 Jun 2005 14:35:51

Marty Marty Marty....
Yes, without question Jerry Reed is the most underrated guitarist of all time.
His playing
has been a huge influence on just about every style of player out there, even if
they dont
realize it, through other players that have directly influenced them.
Comparing EJ and JR, it really cant be done. A more realistic comparison would
be EJ and
Vai, and Reed and Derek Trucks. Why? EJ/Vai is more the technician school of
thought with
feeling playing second fiddle to perfect execution. Reed/Trucks/Vaughan school
of thought is
damn the technique, if it feels good - let it roll. And roll they all did.
Eric Johnson is probably the closest thing to the perfectly balanced guitarist
though. A
master technician, he actually DOES have the 'touch' and feeling when he lets
that side of
him show. I remember the first time I ever saw him, on Austin City Limits back
in the mid
80's - I was getting ready to go out and he came on... I sat there and watched
it all, blew
off my date and everything else going on in the world for that half hour. Tones
(his first
album) was a bit of a disappointment, but Ah Via Musicom is still a masterpiece.
Venus Isle
was a let down except for a couple of tunes. Alien Love Child was fun though.
EJ wont ever be as free as Reed, it's just not him. Listen to Jerry Reed's late
60's / early
70's album cuts - not the hits - and be blown away at a guitarist who plays
things his way
with no concern for technicalities or school of 'you cant do that on geetar'.
Just one of
those rare geniuses that comes along all too rarely.
I've heard EJ hint at some surfy stuff, but never full out surf content. Let's
hope someday
he does an album where he covers ALL musical styles at least once.

Yo Robb,
I certainly made no comparisons. By the way, I was wrong about EJ's
new album. I've given it second and third listens and can't wait to
give it more listens. It's mostly good and there's a lot of variety
on there.

My fave so far is "Columbia". Seems like it's something of a heroic
tribute to the departed crew of the ill-fated shuttle, and not an ode
to illicit South American wares, ha. It sounds like he has relaxed
his self-imposed perfectionism, and let more heart through. He gets
some fantastic, warm tones that I've never heard on any of his other
releases. It's more raw, and doesn't suffer from the overproduction
of Venus Isle. There's more sitar and fuzz too. Compared with Venus
Isle, it sounds like a blanket was lifted off the speakers:
everything has more dynamics, color, and texture and not muddied by
echo and reverb. "Good To Me" is a real departure from his usual
thing. Time to dig out my Fulltone '70 and start learning this album.
