Question regarding spooky, mellow surf guitar

onlytwothingstodo - 16 Jun 2005 01:59:49

Hello all. I'm new here. I have little knowledge of surf music, and
I'm desperately hoping somebody can help me with my dilemma. A few
years ago I was in Austin and heard some surf guitar instrumentals on
an independent radio station late at night. These were very slow,
mellow, SPOOKY, and reverby. There might have been wah wah too. I was
in somebody else's car when I heard them, and I couldn't call the
station to ask what bands were being played (nor did the DJ announce
it). Maybe I'll never find the songs I heard, but can anyone recommend
artists whose music fits this description? (many if possible) I need
some spooky tranquil music for my summer nights.
Thanks to any and all
-Jeff

You might also wanna check out Gein and The
Graverobbers. He somehow manages to get the coolest
creepy sound out of his Jazzmaster.

Yeah, they are spooky, but I would not call The Ghastly Ones "slow,
mellow, or tranquil". ;-)
I'm guessing he heard the Mermen, but it's really hard to say.

Excuse me while I self promote, but we had a couple moody tunes on
Locked and Loaded. "Deception Bay" which can be heard here:
and the Title Track Locked and Loaded. You'll have to buy the CD for
that one (grin).
Happy Reverbs!

What an incredible song, one of my favorites on that
CD-- spinetingling, tense, cinematic- actually, so
visual it doesn't need a film to go with it. And
wasn't there a great name behind the story, someguy
sent you a fan letter from New Zealand?

I'll chime in my 2-cents, and tell the world that I'm lead guitar and songwriter
with the surf band Longboard Ranch, and I'd be sorely tempted to sell my soul to
have a song like Point Deception to our credit! Bravo!!!!

Thanks Ferenc. You're pretty close, it's in Australia actually.
Somebody ordered a CD with that on the return address about the time we
were looking for the 'perfect' name for that song. Side bar -
Eventually the same guy sent us a copy of Mad Max that was not
overdubbed with American accents back when you couldn't get that in
America.
There are a lot of stories attached to 'Deception Bay' but I'll just
say it's in D minor - the saddest of all keys.

I think we're going about answering your question the wrong way. I'll
try to answer it by mentioning a few songs that come to mind such
as "Apache", "Wayward Nile", "Movin'", "Caravan" (some versions),
and "Lonely Surfer". Also listen to the Vivisectors "Scary Song" (look
on our links page). These are probably not the song(s) you heard
but they fit the description. In general, look for slow surf music in
a minor key.
