Reappearance of the 24" Squier Jagmaster ?

stratrhythm - 12 Jun 2005 22:16:42

I noticed on musiciansfriend.com today that the 24" scale version of
the Squire Jagmaster has been reintroduced. $291. That's probably a
pretty decent price for a body and neck to start modifying on, eh?

It's decent enough if you happen to prefer a super short-scale. I have the
earlier 251/2"-scale Jagmaster, which also has a solid Alder body, and find it
has the right feel for me. These guitars definitely lend themselves to
modification - I mean, if you do nothing else than swap the Humbuckers out and
install J/M or Jag pups, you've got the look and tone, with a far better trem
set-up, and you're in the guitar only about $400! The Sunburst is good to see
available, but if they have it available, my preference would be the CAR finish
with MOP Pick-guard. I'll post a photo of my Jagmaster so you can see this
color-scheme.

I wouldn't call a 24" scale a "super short scale" short but not
super short. The Rickenbacker 325 and the Gibson Byrdland scales
would be more deserving of the "super short scale" title.

I agree with that. It is much shorter compared to the Strat, Tele, and
Jazzmaster. But I believe Gibson's are 24.75 and Gretsch is 24.6. Both
of those are closer to the 24 than they are to 25.5. Maybe the 25.5 is
"super long scale".

For anybody that may care, it seems that the neck on
the newer shortscale Jagmasters is actually not quite
like the Jaguar neck, which is what the original Vista
Series Jagmasters had. They're actually cheaper at
Music123 and Zzounds than Musicians Friend. I played
one and it's pretty nice for a cheap guitar.

What pickups would you recommend for this swap? I have seen
advertised Fender MIA RI, MIJ or would you go with one of the seymor
duncan versions of the Jag pickup. BTW I am looking for a Jag style
pickup.
I Have the sunburst and it is way cool.
Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob,
We're blessed to be living in an age where there are so many really cool choices
available.
As far as pickups, the Jagmaster lends itself to three potential modifications:
1. A 2 (Jazzmaster or Jaguar) pickup configuration;
2. A 3-pickup Strat clone in an off-set body
3. Neck & Bridge Jazzmaster or Jaguar pickups with a Strat pickup in the middle
position, (My personal choice, and the only guitar I used on both Longboard
Ranch CD's)
Both Fender AV Jazzmaster and AV Jaguar pickups are excellent approximations of
the originals, They've gone out of their way to replicate the materials and
methods used in making the original J/M and Jag pickups back in the 1960's. The
AV pups obviously being brand new, will sound slightly different than the
original 1965 pickups in an L-Series guitar. First of all, the L-Series pickups
have had 40 years in which to deteriorate, (i.e., magnets no longer as strong as
when new, etc etc.) The point is, if you want your 2005 guitar to sound like
the original Jags and J/M's did in the 1960's, then bear in mind, those original
40-year old guitars do not sound the same today, as they did back then when they
were still new.
Seymour Duncan offers 3 or 4 varieties of J/M and Jag replacement pickups.
There are the "Vintage for Jazzmaster" and "Vintage for Jaguar" Seymours, which
is their best effort at replcating the original 1960's pickups. There are
the"Hot for J/M" and "Hot for Jag" pickups which give a stronger output, for
those who want a similar, but more aggressive sound, and there are the
Quarter-Pounder series for both pickups as well. You can visit the Seymour
Duncan website, and listen to recordings made with these different pickups
installed in J/M's and Jags, and choose what sounds best to you.
In my Jagmaster, I wanted to have the flexibility to make Jazzmaster AND
Stratocaster sounds, so I had my guitar tech wire in 2 Seymour Duncan "Vintage
for Jazzmster" pups, in the neck and bridge, and then a Fender '57/62 Strat R/I
pup in the middle. With the Strat style trem/bridge, the original sound of the
the Jazzmaster is somewhat compromised, but in my opinion, this is an
improvement, in that there is more natural sustain, especially if you upgrade
the trem to a Fender American Deluxe Series tailpiece - you'll have more sustain
and clearer note definition than with the standard generic Asiatic bridge.
The pickup config on my Jagmaster, allows me to play most anything and get a
tone and sound that are appropriate to the song. Using the neck and bridge J/M
pickups together, and with the Reverb Unit dialed up, I get a tone described by
Phil Dirt, in his review, as "Surf-Perfect". Using the middle Strat pickup by
itself, I can play more generic instro songs with a nice aggressive attack, and
a more rock-appropriate tone.
At the price they're selling the Jagmaster, you could buy two, and try different
configurations and different pickups on each one - like make one a J/M type, and
the other a Strat type, or whatever. They are very well executed, and the
finish quality is great, plus, I like the feel of the neck on mine.
I hope you get the results you're hoping for when you get the project finished!
