Pedal Problems...

Twangler (twangler23) - 12 Jun 2005 22:15:13

Greetings,
Today my Dan-Electro Delay/Echo pedal seems to have died for no reason
at all. For kicks, I decided to plug into a channel on my amp that has
'echo' just to see what it sounded like. When I plugged back into the
original channel, All I could get was a barely audible signal.
The cords were all good and everything worked as long as I bi-passed
the pedal. The "on" light works but it seems to have crapped out.
Now my question - Has anybody had Den-electro pedals screw up on them?
Second -
If I can't fix this thing, what pedals are recommended to duplicate
that tape echo sound?
Happy Reverbs!

Dunno exactly which Dano pedal you have, but the large ones seem to be
pretty well made. I like my large Dan-Echo pedal, but I haven't really
beat it up. The mini pedals, cool and cheap as they are, really are
built like potato chips. I've had three fail, and a few others are
balky. They're so cheap that they're not worth fixing (not that you
could anyway}. If yours is a mini, try the large Dan-Echo, it's pretty
cheap and not bad sounding. For gigs, I use an old analog Boss DM-2
and DM-3, which are simple and sound great, but seem to have gotten
collectable and go for about $150 on Ebay for nice ones. Haven't tried
the large units that look like Echoplexes, but I heard one today and
thought it was very cool (but expensive and clunky). There must be a
zillion delay pedals---when in doubt, line 'em up at your local store
and have fun!

imho, the big danelectropedals are equally crap, due to the fact that
the in- and outputs are mounted on a pcb, and that is the ONLY
connection they have with the pedalbox. three tiny solder joints to
hold a much used (and frictioned - sp?) part of the pedal? the
designer who thought that up must have had a bad day.
chances are that is what is wrong with your pedal too - first the
sound goes weak and starts making crackling (sp?) noises, then it
craps out alltogether. I had two crap out on me allready, I'd say
check that out first.
I am still trying to figure out whether there is a way to mount
decent (box attached) inputs - but i haven't found a part that will
fit yet. you can resolder the joints tho, and if they are broken,
take two from an el cheapo mini effect you score off ebay, and put
those in. I tried both ways and it works for now, but the fact
remains the same that it is an inherent design flaw, and it will crap
out eventually. having them on a pedal board of course helps.
that being said, i love the way the danecho's sound esp considering
the price. soundwise its a great pedal, that's why i fixed 'em up.

Wannes,
I don't think that the designer of the Danelectro pedals had a bad day. I
think his boss is an accountant instead of an engineer.
The pedals just had to be the cheapest possible, thus low labor cost (made
in china) & plastic box.
You can easily state that the price of the more expensive Boss pedals is
determined by the higher quality box, pots, switches and jacks and not by the
electronics inside.
What I did with my Danelectro delay is that I took out the printboard,
discarded the plastic case unsolder pots jacks and switches put the PCB into
a descent alu box with quality pots, jacks and switches which I connected to
the PCB with wires.

roland, of course, still it seems stupid because qua sound, i'd
choose the dan over a boss any time, and I'd pay a little extra for
decent jacks - the pots and switches don't bother me that much, but
somehow cheap jacks always go wrong.
your solution seems fine, but I have so many projects lying around i
really don't need another one right now - both my danecho's are
working for the time being, so i'll just keep my fingers crossed.
