zen of the longboard

DP (noetical1) - 11 Jun 2005 11:54:08

jacob:
it is amusing...I guess in comparison to
short-board-spazz-surfing, longboarding does look a little
"laid back"...
truth be told...longboarding simply was the "original" way
to surf....walking and noseriding the small stuff, cruising
and carving the medium waves...and ripping high speed down
the face of the big-ass killer hawaiian waves.
i guess since many of the old-timers entered their 50s, 60s
and beyond, many have taken to the "laid-back" cruiser
aspect of longboard surfing and surf culture.
as a 40 year old longboard gremmie/newbie/hodad of two
years, i have to add that longboarding, even at my pathetic
skill level is a total exhilirating gas!...100% Dick Dale
staccato slide at full volume, if you know what I mean.
nothing "laid back" about longboarding in my book,

A shortboard has less chance of crushing all of your bones when it
lands on you. Not very "x"-treme if you ask me. I am not a fan o fthe
short boards. I don't like the "tricks" they do. I love watching the
Endless Summer for great surfing.

You need to be careful when you surf. Read the above article.

you're right, a conventional fiberglass 10 footer can
really build up some incredible
bone-crushing-skull-splitting inertia, that's for sure!
Since I'm just a newbie/hodad/beginer (at age 40), I still
use a Doyle 10 foot softboard (boogie board material, you
know like those 'rental' surfboards)...but, even so, I
still get my noggin knocked around every once in a while!
I dig endless summer...I have loved that movie ever since
my dad took me to see it at age 6. also all those bruce
brown surf flicks like Surf Crazy etc.
good old school surf
