Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: Imagery and Use of Lyrics in Surf Music: Chris Isaak

DP (noetical1) - 11 Jun 2005 11:39:23

Chris Isaak's "Baja Sessions" CD also has a distinctly
"surf" flavour and feel to it...maybe it's all the
longboarder imagery which overflows the liner and CD
artwork that does it...but, all the tunes fit really well
with the "summer surf" 2 CD mix I just completed...good
listening when travling down south to Trestles, Oceanside,
WindandSea...and beyond...

I've always found this amusing. You speak of the longboard imagery and
then Slacktone has Longboard Legato. In all the original surf and high
energy Dick Dale stuff it is about the longboard. When did the
longboard become a laidback way of surfing?

I never thought about longboarding as laid-back. In the 1950s and '60s, the best
pros
charged on longboards. When the shortboard revolution happened in the 1970s, pro
surfers universally switched to the more maneuverable shortboards for contest
events. I
scarcely remember even seeing longboards on the beach in the late 1970s!
But, longboards began making a comeback, especially with aging surfers. Big
boards are a
lot easier to get going, and less demanding to ride than the short sticks.
Starting 10 years ago, riders like Wingnut, La Jolla's Joel Tudor, and Beau
Young (whose
father, Nat, led the shortboard revolution in Australia) brought back
high-performance
longboard surfing. If you catch their acts, or contests featuring today's best
longboarders, you'll see that longboards can be very lively indeed!
Still, a good shortboard rider is wonderful to watch - I never criticize
anybody's choice of
surf equipment, unless its a body board!

i had a beautiful 9'2" surfboards hawaii stepdown back in the late
60's and when the short board revolution hit i could barely give it
away. ended up selling it for $20 and ran into someone in the late
70's with it that had traded a 6-pack for it! (sigh) i can only
imagine what it would be worth today........my afternoon surf session
today went from 'stoked' stuck in my head to 'surfrider'.....funny
what this music does to ya......

Hey! watch it pal, Boogie Boards (and for that matter
No-Board Bodysurfing) are still cool! Anything that gets
you to the beach and out in the surf...it's all good with
me...
...except for jet skiers, that is...(cringe!)
