Fender Reverb

Jacob Dobner (jacobdobner) - 10 Jun 2005 11:32:58

That is a good question about Neil. A lot of his solos and stuff have
a lot of reverb on them. His solo on All Along the Watch Tower and My
Back Pages at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary really have a lot of
reverb. They never show his amp in the video so I can't see what he is
using.

Here is a Guitar Player magazine interview from 1992 I came accross
where Neil talks all about his gear...
It includes links to other gear related interviews too.

Thanks for the link to the article, William. Here is the pertanent info from
that article, it's very interesting:
JO: What effects do you use the most?
NY: An original tube Echoplex, an MXR analog delay, a Boss flanger, and an old
white Fender reverb unit with new springs that are separate. The springs are on
a microphone stand that goes on the cement floor of the building. It extends up
to the bottom of the stage, and the spring stands on top of the microphone stand
and the wire comes through a hole in the stage completely separate. I can't use
it if I don't do that, because if I jump onstage, the spring rattles. It has to
be isolated from the surface of anything that's vibrating.
JO: What if you can't drill a hole in the stage?
NY: No, we do it. We just put a hole in the stage. There's always a way. It
can't be very far away, because with a long wire, you lose the fidelity, the
high end where the reverb lives, so the magic is gone. You've got to keep it
close and really short.

Ah, now I get it. Yes, the tray is floating on a mic stand that is under the
stage and wired back to the outer case with the controls through a hole in the
stage.
I use two settings on the tank, 7-7-7 and 4-4-4. Its easy enough to manually
reset between songs but I do need the controls handy. I do need rig up some type
of suspension device for those vibrating wood stages.

Marty, i just re-read the thing and it turns out it's just the tray
that is under the stage. that whizzer thing, or whatever he calls it,
is one cool mofo device! but if the settings aren't that crucial, i
guess Neil could easily afford a couple of substage roadies with
cellphones.
On a different note, for some guitarsists - myself at times not
excluded - not being able to fuck about with the settings while on
stage might be considered an advantage.

knobs on his amp when he hits a foot switch. Maybe he has the same
for the reverb.

Danny Snyder (twangbangin) - 10 Jun 2005 16:30:24

Marty, I too like to switch between 2 settings on my reverb. Inching
up on my to do list is to make a footswitch with a pot on it. When
switched it will cut out the mix pot on the unit and replace it with
the one on the footswitch, which is preset to my preference. Perhaps
I can do the same with the Dwell. Seems like a straightforward
project, but one never knows until....

Marty,
I have seen people suspend their reverb units with bungee
cords from improvised aluminum tube "racks"...I have also
seen people using those folding "motel room" suitcase
stands...you know, the ones with aluminum tube legs with
webbing strung across...seemed like a good idea to me...

I imagine Fender could upgrade the tank with foot controllable presets but the
type of folks who buy the tank are they type that would say it doesn't sound as
good with presets. I have to admit that there is something to be said for that,
"if it works, don't fix it".

The tank will give you way more splashy depth, but will also add a mean trebley,
almost distorted tone that borders on being too loud no matter how quiet you're
playing...which is why I love the tank.

Well the answer is Vinnie Bell's guitar on the Midnight Cowboy Theme (original
soundtrack album hit version). He also did a wonderful album full of his
dripping wet guitar called "Airport Love Theme".
