Fender Reverb

reverbtron - 09 Jun 2005 20:06:36

Can someone comment on the difference in sound quality between a fender
reverb tank and the standard reverb you find on most fender combos.
thanks.

It's night and day. Listen to a surf album such as those by the Astronauts,
Surfaries, Jon and the Nightriders or Fathoms. That depth of reverb is not
obtained from the built-in reverb on a combo amp. It comes from a tank.

Of course, you mean a reissue tank with NOS tubes and a cap mod, right
Marty? ;)
Sorry, couldn't resist - just kidding, Marty! (I'm still giddy from the
Satan's Pilgrims shows . . . )
Seriously, I agree with Marty - an outboard tank seems to bring a lot more
depth and drip. To really hear the difference, you have to listen for
yourself. Find a store that has an outboard tank, and check it out vs. a
combo unit. Or check out a surf band that uses outboard tanks, if possible.

If you are really serious about surf then just look at all the bands
who use a reverb unit vs onboard reverb. I don't really know of any
bands that don't use the tank. Can anybody start compiling a list of
bands that don't?

Well Jacob, If you really want us to start compiling a list of bands that don't
use (or didn't use) a reverb tank, I guess I'll start. Now let me see...there's
Ben Folds Five, The Hives, Weezer, Built to Spill, Elton John, Led Zeppelin,
Black Sabbath, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, CCR, Abba, Argent, The Who,
Chic, War, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Teenage Fanclub, Oasis, Guns and
Roses,...man this is gonna be long. Some of these bands may have used a tank
once or twice but they are generally not known for using a reverb tank.

Much of the difference has to do with totally different circuitry. The reverb
that's built-in to an amp, is all part of a circuit that is auxilliary to the
main circuitry of the amp. Thus, the on-board reverb is powered from the main
power supply of the amp. Virtually all on-board reverbs have only one tube, in
the pre-amp section, and only one control pot, for strength of signal, the tone
and dwell functions being pre-set and unchangeable.
An outboard reverb unit is a stand-alone unit, independently powered from the
amp, and typical Fender design incorporates two pre-amp tubes along with the
main power tube. There are three controls on the outboard reverb, Dwell, Mix,
and Tone. With an outboard reverb unit that's operating at its best, you should
be able to get reverb sounds that are quite subtle and barely noticeable, all
the way to the totally drenched out sound of the Surfaris' "Wipe-Out".
Try making "Wipe Out" sound at all close to the original using the on-board
reverb in your amp, and you'll really appreciate the difference that an outboard
unit can make.

Twangler (twangler23) - 10 Jun 2005 00:04:26

I have to admit when I traded my Twin for a Showman and Reverb Tank, I
was a little saddened by my new reverb sound, but keep in mind my style
of play was a lot of Strumming on a Rickenbacker with very little muted
string action. I always thought the muted string thing sounded good but
was boring to play.
I think the pan and springs in a Twin are longer. I thought it was more
organic, or something, and rang out longer. At least mine did.
I think I heard somewhere with vintage gear, time and gravity can take
a toll on the springs.
If you're playing lead or going for that super reverb drenched sound
though, you need an outboard tank.
Confused? I am after rereading that.
Happy Reverbs!

I have never seen The Ventures perform live, with outboard reverbs. In all the
photos and videos I've seen of them on stage, going back to the mid 1960's, I've
never seen them plugged into anything but straight into their amps. So, my eyes
match what my ears have told me all along, that The Ventures use so little
reverb, the inboard reverbs on their amps was always more than enough for them.

wonder if he uses a tank on some things such as "Hurricane".

i remember reading in a GP once that Neil Young uses a (Fender)
reverb tank - it's set up under the stage to prevent vibration. the
amp is a vintage tweed deluxe I think, but i could be wrong. I
remeber of live recordings that he had huge reverb - but it's been
ages since i've listened to those.

Now that's a good idea setting the reverb tank under the stage. Of course the
problem then would be changing knob settings. I know that Neil's guitar tech has
rig'd up a device that mechanically turns the knobs on his amp when he hits a
foot switch. Maybe he has the same for the reverb.

Marty, i just re-read the thing and it turns out it's just the tray
that is under the stage. that whizzer thing, or whatever he calls it,
is one cool mofo device! but if the settings aren't that crucial, i
guess Neil could easily afford a couple of substage roadies with
cellphones.
On a different note, for some guitarsists - myself at times not
excluded - not being able to fuck about with the settings while on
stage might be considered an advantage.
