speakers for DRRI

dsurkis1 - 31 Oct 2002 20:14:21

Howdy surf guitar folks.
Looking for opinions on the best speaker for the fender 65 deluxe
reverb reissue. Here is what I've tried so far
- stock fender/eminence: not terrible, highs a bit harsh
- Weber 12F150 50W: did not like, sounded tight, no bottom, could not
get loud
- Weber 12F150 25W: slightly better high end than eminence, breaks up
earlier though.
Anyone try a reissue jensen or Celestion vintage 30? Would love to
read what you have heard.
Thanks
Dan

I inherited a '66 Twin Reverb, bone stock. I thought the factory Jensen's
sucked, replaced them with a set of JBL's and the previously weak suck
amplifier was now the voice of god. What anyone sees (err, hears) in
anything ever made by Jensen, is beyond me.
so I'd say go JBL, if big tone, tons of overhead and ability to sing true at
low volumes is what you're looking for.

ditto on the JBL's - the D120s are really expensive, the K120's are
less and I can't hear the difference, I have not heard an E120 but
I'll bet it's good. other possibility is ElectroVoice EVM 12.
Possibly Weber California series with aluminum dust cap, I have not
heard one, but the Californias without the aluminum do not match the
JBL's clarity in IMHO.
these spkrs will make your amp louder (and heavier - a twin w/2 JBLs
is a recipe for back injury for us old farts) and less distortion at
higher volumes - for me a DR is not usable with a drummer until you
put a higher efficiency spkr in it

Yeah - Bob speaketh the truth about weight - the JBL's weigh in at like
40lbs EACH for a 12" (at least mine were, have to go look to see which model
they are). I am scared to move the amp for fear of pulling the handle out of
the top! It takes a mule, 8 pygmies and a team of midget wrestlers to move
that monster... but man does it sing...
My '94 Blues Deluxe is bone stock, but is an amazing sounding amp for what
it is. The 'verb isnt exactly soaking wet, but it works well and weighs
about 1/3rd of what the big Twin does. Very LOUD to be a single 12" / 40w
amp... which I hate, as I usually prefer an amp that gets it's mojo on about
2-4 on the volume scale. This Twin kicks in around 3.5, and the BD gets
going around 2.5 but both have enough headroom that if you wanted to, you
could blow the windows out of the house without getting distorted.
