Re: Wipeout (was A question and a Rant from a drummer)

howlinthurstons - 08 Jun 2005 14:33:28

One of these days I must go back to the original recording...I played
around with this so much and have heard so many different people play
it that I doubt I can play it right. If fact, if memory serves I learn
it from a friend not off the record.
Of course this begs the question, should the drum part be played note
for note or should it be interpreted?

The drums are the signature of the song, so I would
either REALLY figure out what Ron Wilson did, or do
something VERY different.
From my perspective, almost all covers of "Wipe Out"
don't measure up. The biggest reason is that Ron's
Style is very difficult to replicate. He played very
fluidly and loosely, and if you every saw him play,
you'd get it immediately. He looked like he was made
of rubber and danced around the kit as he played
sometimes. You could hear the big grin on his face in
his playing.

You also have to drop the stick near the end of the song and play
one-handed to the end.:)

Except Jay dropped one stick and broke the other. If you are a drummer
and you instantly want the attention of the guitars up front stop
playing except for with your feet and we will look right over.
