DP (noetical1) - 08 Jun 2005 10:24:24

I play a 1966 Bassman 50 (2x6L6 power valves)...through
2x12 Celestion speakers...a great warm, fat, surf guitar
amp...nice shimmering treble end...a real Fender Jewel!

(Sorry bout the last post hit the wrong button)
My suggestion wasn't to buy the Bassman 100 as a Bassman (which
indeed is one of the most wonderful amps ever built- I envy you dp)-
but since it is a 4 x 6L6 amp take out the overbuilt feed back
circuits and get it closer to an earlier Showman.
As far as the transformer is concerned, Vibroworld shows the
transformer replacement part for a Bassman 100 as Fender part
#125P34A - same as for Fender Twin Reverb, Showman, Dual Showman,
Quad Reverb, and Bassman 100.
Anyway it was just a thought because down here in San Diego no one
seems to want to let go of a Bassman or bandmaster head for less
than $500 or $600 in decent shape, don't see much variation on ebay
either. But maybe i'm wrong.
BTW has anybody ever used the Quad Reverb? There's a shop down here
that's got one.

DP (noetical1) - 08 Jun 2005 13:26:54

Back in the olden days (1983-1985), my punk rock buddy,
Dan, played a killer Fender Quad Reverb...all I can
remember was that thing being powerfully loud!
The on-board reverb was sort of tame for surf...so I would
definately still use an outboard reverb unit. The Quad
tended to break up and crunch a bit after about 6-7 on the
volume...and it would really scream at 8-9...but, man at
that volume level almost any Fender would break up and
scream.
I remember really envying Dan's nice loud Fender Quad
sound...my Bassman 50 could barely keep up, volume
wise...but, we were playing small gigs: houses, warehouses,
the Armory Hall and junk like that...
I played punk guitar, but I played with a St. George reverb
tank back then...and some Blue Tube pre-amp
distortion...you know sort of Agent Orange style.
Dan played the Quad with on-board reverb and a
dallas/arbiter fuzz face...punk rock Ramones sort of
stuff...
that was way before the days of decent PA/mic/soundboard
type sound reinforcement which is pretty standard at most
fairly large gigs today.
maybe that's why I have rampant tinitus these days...I'll
have to ask Pete Townshend about that next time I see
him...
huh? eh?...what'd you say?

i'd take one of those over a bassman 100 for guitar any day....
make sure you've got a strong back or plenty of friends tho'....
i loved the bassman 100 i had...for bass....
for guitar it was pretty blah......i had all the mods suggested done....and
it was just so-so....certainly didn't sound very much like a twin or
showman....

I don't know if he's still hanging around this list or
not but Mike from The Upskirts uses a Quad Reverb and
loves it. He uses an outboard reverb (I think) and
some serious fuzz too. I think it's known for being a
loud, heavy beast. If you don't mind luggin' it
around, you'll probably dig it. If you do a google
search for The Upskirts or look them up on myspace.com
you should see the amp in a couple of pics.

Hey DP, a little off subject, but have you seen that old close up shot
of Pete playing his 64 blonde bassman head? And ladies and gents,
whats more surf than than a blond bassman head, even if Townsend's on
the guitar? I've got a picture in the file I'll send you if you want.
